Governor chip killing my horsepower or top speed??
Hey everyone.
I have a 2.5l 4cylinder 98 ranger. I take it on the freeway and its max speed will be about a hundred. Im not done switching through the gears and I know it goes faster then 100 but when I give it gas even going down a hill it just wont go past it. Is it my governor chip? And if not what is it and how can I kill it? Thanks. |

Re: Governor chip killing my horsepower or top speed??
Its your speed govenor that shuts off your fuel supply at a certain speed. It's there for a reason, and the reason is your truck isn't made to handle real high speeds, well...Your stock tires anyways, but if you're a stubborn speed junkie like me then you can get a programmer and reprogram the govenor for a higher shutoff speed. I'd also think about getting some good racing tires if I were you too.

programmers usually run about 300 dollars and up for the ones i have seen, but i have never priced one for a ranger.

Re: Governor chip killing my horsepower or top speed??
i have a 99 ranger xlt 3.0l auto extended cab and going down hill, i've gotten mine up to 120mph (the limit on the speedometer). i have no aftermarket parts and have not touched anything under the hood. and if it makes me sound any saner, i atleast had brand new tires on when i did that...
