head unit replacement

My mom has a 1999 VW Cabrio that needs a new head unit. The factory unit is failing. I talked to a guy at Best Buy about putting a new one in her car for Christmas. He said they cannot do it because of the wireing harnesses getting messed up and how things are connected to the radio. Does anyone have any information on how to change the head unit without messing anything up in the car? Thanks
