Re: am pm made my car sound like a diesel
so why would you get 91 or 93 or even 101 octane gas, i though that hondas were made to run off of the 89. What is the difference and what are the advantages to using a gasoline with a higher octane rating?

I try to always put 93 in my car from Mobile. I pay 1.95 ish for it. sometimes i throw in 94 from sunoco but I still like the 93 from mobile better. if I'm completely hbroke I put 87 from Hess in cuz that is like only 1.65 but after like two tanks of it I notices my car is really doggin it.
prices are on average around here 87~ 1.65 89~ 1.75 92-93~ 1.95 94~ 1.97 but if you go further upstate or further downstate it gets more expensive.

Re: am pm made my car sound like a diesel
yes, honda's min octane rating is 86 if am not mistaken (correct me if am wrong on this one). i think gas like 91 or 93 makes a more efficient burn and better gas mileage compared to the 87...plus it makes your engine last longer because of the cleaner burn. ive compared the mileage for the 87 and 91 and there is a difference.

The 94+gsr's and the ITR's have a min octane rating of 91 and i thik the LS has a min of 89, not sure about the ls but I know for a fact (owners manual) that the vtec models do require 91+. The reason is b/c of the higher C/R. Also yes the milage is better with the higher octane and it is better for the car, if you add up how much it costs to go x amount of miles on 87 then how much it costs to go the same distance with 93 it will be real close, so it basically washes out and you are using something that is better for your car.

I've seen 92 far far away though, but usually just get 91 because thats all they have. I get chevron with techron. $1.95 a gallon, but its all good.

oh and just a side note for u guys, a friend told me there was a study done to to find out the octane rating of that gas we use, and the results showed that majority of gas had higher ratings than what was labeled on the gas pumps. the 87, 89 ,and 91 octane rating is the minimum, that's why some times u will see min. under the rating. some even had ratings of the minimum +3. for example, 87+3=90. as far as what kind of gas to use, acura reccomends 91 or higher although lower ratings can be use, but there will be a notice on lower performance and economy.

Re: am pm made my car sound like a diesel
The danger when running the 86 or so with say a gsr is that the 10:1 C/R can cause some pinging in hot weather conditions like you might have in cali. I double checked and the min required for the LS,RS,GS &SE is 86, but hte GSR was 91 + only. I think if you really want to run the cheaper gas with anything less than 91 then get a set of 1 degree colder spark plugs to help prevent ping.
