Hello there, welcome to AF.

First I'd suggest just poking around the threads hear and reading up on stuff. Maybe pick up a Magzine or two, (Sport Compact Car, and Honda Tuning I'd recommend) and then just asking questions about stuff you aren't sure, or want some info about. It's a total learning experience, even for the ones that seem like masters at it. I'll try to help you out though if I can.

For a start, how about an introduction of yourself? Like your name, age, and car you drive if applicable.

good suggestions.....

the way i started all this is because i was the only girl in my family and all the guys were always talking about this stuff....so i started reading mags....hanging out under the hood and watching....asking lots of questions and tearing apart my own car...even if it meant i seriously broke it...i took the chances....just get down n dirty!

That's a lot similar to how I started out myself and another good way to start. I mean I'm not a girl, and don't have brothers, but I used to talk up cars with my cousin when I was little and that's what really got me into imports particularly.

Take an auto's class @ a community college, the best way of learning is hands-on with somebody who knows what they are doing.

or you could enroll into the UTI auto/diesel course...its 18 months long and i think tuition went up to 22g....it was well worth the money and the time.

Okay I'm going to be outed as a major nerd by this ...but probably first start with the basics...start with the engine and learn how a 4-stroke motor works (All car engines..most motorcycle engines). There are 4 strokes that a car engine cycles through when making power (sorry my is untechnical )
1) When the Piston goes down in the cylinder it draws in air and fuel (Intake) 2) Then when the piston goes up in the cylinder it compresses the air that was drawn in (Compression) 3) then when the piston goes down again the air fuel mixture is ignited (Power stroke) 4) Then the piston is raised again and pushes the air out of the exhaust valves. Start with the engine, then work your way out....if you understand simply that power is produced from the ignition of air and fuel then you can start to understand Engine mods, VTEC, etc
For instance Yamaha/Audi uses a 5 Valve head design as opposed to 4 valves per cylinder. Instead of 2 intake ports and 2 exhaust ports there are 3 intake ports and 2 exhaust ports to draw in more air....(simplified version)...After u understand the basics...the rest will come easy

Wooooo hoooooo!!!! I think I killed the thread by getting to technical...where was the damn bookworm thread????

The way I learned all of that was by working in a motorcycle dealership with old former hell's angels who made me learn it...then reading magazines (Someone brought it up)...experience from working on my own car...and looking at the mods people do on race cars and engines and understanding why people made the changes and the principles behind them...of course if you just want to add a turbo/supercharger/NOS...that's not too hard to figure out

the real only way to learn is to do so first start with the small things like shifters, brakes, throttle bodies and the easy thing that wont break if you get into but decide to put back together so...yah start with small things and work your way around the motor and dont get ahead of yourself and dont get discouraged
