hi. someone i know is considering to buy an used a4 (maybe 96 to 98)
i would like to know what any of you guys think about those models.
what about the 1.8 and the 2.8?
he's not going for any mods on it. he want a great car with fiability that will last several years.
what are the common problems on those model. i've read about some bushing and ignition problems..is there others?? i would like to get comments form audi owners.

I haven't owned an A4 but I have a friend who has had a 98 2.8. I would recomend getting the 2.8, getting an older naturally aspired engine would be more reliable than an older 1.8T. And, since you aren't planning on modding, that gives you even less of a reason to go with the 1.8T as it is very good for modding. The 2.8 will give you more power off the bat. You have good taste looking at the a4.

If you're not going to mod the car I'd say get the 2.8. It's more power out of the box. If he changes his mind and wants to do some mods, the 1.8t is the only way to go. I can't say I agree that the 2.8 is more reliable than the 1.8T though. As far as things to watch out for there isn't too much. Obviously check for regular maitenance, if the car is over 60k make sure the timing belt, tensioner have been replaced. (Preventative maintenance). If your friend wants some more details on maintenance and specifics on models have him check the following sites.
