sq = sound quality
spl = sound pressure level (aka, all out loudness)

type r are good

i work for circuit city and i have two 12 type r's in my car. i wouldn't have traded out my jl w4's if i didn't think they were good. they do handle 300 watts rms. i'm using the alpine mrdm500 and that's plenty of power for them. get the dual 2 ohm subs not the dual 4 ohm ones if you're planning to get two 12s. you can wire the coils in series and then parallel the speakers. that way you'll get a 2 ohm load which is what the mrdm500 can take. most amps are only 2 ohm stable, unless you're will to spend big bucks on an amp that can handle less than 2 ohms. but you don't need those kinds of amp for your application here.

type r are best in sealed box

i forgot to mention that you should always go sealed. no one in competition uses ported/bandpass boxes. sealed will give you a lower frequency response (deeper bass) and cleaner sounding bass. ported/bandpass boxes will give louder bass, but a more sloppy sound. plus ported/bandpass boxes are huge compared to a sealed box. you will need more power to run subs in a sealed box, but the alpine mrdm500 i suggested is enough. the recommended volume for the 12" type r's is 0.88 cubic feet each sub (sealed) using 3/4" mdf board with a center divider between the subs. get it customed made to those specs.

i will be happy to show u many champions in SPL and SQ comps that won using ported box.

define cleaner bass. ever heard and idmax in a sealed box and a ported box? sealed isn't so much "cleaner" now is it? ported gives the idmax a bit more dynamic sounding, something the sealed box can't give (to that particular sub)

sloppy sound? u mean group delay? that can be GREATLY reduced. tune the port low and get the group delay below 20m/s at 20hz. general rule.

agreed...(except the manufactor spec)

Re: Type R subs

i have a type r sub 12'. i had it connected to a 800 watt amp and it blew out in a month. when it comes to speakers, alpine sucks on quality and sound, but when it come to alpine radeo's there the top o the line....

thats cuz 800 watts is too much for the sub, and you might mean like 800 so 400x2, and if so then somehting was wrong with your box or??? alpine makes good shit.

Yea, Alpine makes good stuff. I got the impression he connected an 800 watt amp to one type-r sub. That is way to much power flowing for that 1 sub. That's screaming "kill my sub" hooking that much power up to it. I hope I am wrong. You gotta be dumb to throw 800 watts at 1 type-r. Like you siad, if he had 2 type-r 12" subs, maybe the box, or the wiring, or something, cuz alpine doesn't suck, so he should go saying Alpine blows. And if he only had 1 type-r, well, then he was asking for it to blow by hooking it up to that amp.

I was thinkoing something like maybe the amp is 400x2@2 ohms and 400x1@4 ohms, and he got the single 4 ohm version and then it wouldnt be so bad, but I think all of the first ones were DVC and thsats stilla n option so if he had a 4 ohm DVC and had 2 ohms to that amp, all 800 watts are pouring ino tthat baby. but maybe the amp only puts out 800x1@1ohm and he was only feeding it 400 watts, theres just too many wiring/load combinations for me to assume anything, but if it blew in a month, either its a bad sub(not bad company( or something majorly wrong was done on install.
