C1500 camper weight ratings

I've got a 92 extended long box and have a small import 7 foot camper with a dry wieght of 1200 lbs. For the heck of it, I was reading about camper loads and the tag in the glove box says max 698 lbs. Jeez, thats the weight of a canopy plus a coupla dozen beer. They can't be serious - has anyone run into this before? I'm over on GVWR and rear axle VWR.
This is a half ton?

I have an 1980 model 1/2 ton truck. The title and vehicle tag both say there is an empty weight of 3200 lbs and a gross weight of 4200 lbs. But when I "light-weighed" the truck with just me and full tanks of gas (no tool box or anything), the weight was 4800 lbs. I have a slide-in-the-bed camper that is just over 1000 lbs. I have pulled trailers over 8000 lbs, but I have upgrade my rear suspension and added a steering stabilizer to the steering linkage. I don't have trouble with control or braking ablity with either the camper or heavy trailer. I hope this helps you.

Doug
