Question Airflow meters in skylines

Hello every1,

I have heard that a/f meter problems are very common on skylines and currently my car seems to be stalling at low speeds while the clutch is in. Is this a problem attributable to the a/f meter?

Also, where is the a/f meter located and what does it look like and how can I go about cleaning it? - apparently that can help.

Cheers.

It could be your problem yes but it could also be something else. They are so notorious for giving problems. They either work or they don't. If you have an aftermarket blow off valve that will also give you the same symptoms if it is leaking or not adjust right.

Your AFM is located just before your factory airbox or pod filter. see photo below. Cleaning them is very tricky. You have to cut the wire mesh off and use a very soft tooth brush. You've got to be so very careful of the metering flap as they break off easily. It would more than likely be a dry soilder joint inside under the square cap which is sealed. Some have cut that seal and opened it, resoildered it and resealed it successfully.

In terms of cleaning them, I've just sprayed them with electrical cleaner - though you'll want the stuff which doesn't leave a residue, otherwise you'll make new problems.

And I'd have to say, Razor, I've found they don't just work or not work. Mine was just a little bit off, and when I got it opened up and everything cleanedup/re-soldered, the car went heaps better. Even though the guy who did it didn't believe it would make a difference; but then we've encountered lack of belief from most experts when looking at Andy's car, and we always turned out to be right

Yes and no. Recently mine in the GTR got a little dirty and had Robin clean them. What a difference! If you thought the car moved before mate, hell it spins the wheels over in first without dumping the clutch and again shifting into second.

That'sexactly what I found (apart from the wheelspin thing: I don't do that cos I'm a nice Boy )

Anyway, even though there were no obvious problems, when I swapped my AFM with Andy's- which had been opened up and resoldered - (the reasons I swapped mine with hers are long and irrelevant ), my car went so much better that I decided my AFM must be a little less than perfect.

Now we both have nice working AFMs 8)

Raf again they either work right or they don't. 80% of the time you will find it is just dirty. The other 20% are dry solder joints as you pointed out.
Keeping in mind they are suppose to be self cleaning, yea right.

Long time no post....

Anyway, having had both my AFM's fail on me....the car will bobble and lose power, completely randomly. If you have the clutch disengaged, the engine will pretty much die.

If it's only happening when you disengage the clutch, it's most likely something else....
