SR20 and CA18 weights??

Hey all, searched but no luck.

This may be kind of an oddball question, but does anyone know what an sr20det and ca18det long block and tranny weigh? one of these two swaps will be going into my 73 triumph spitfire, I had planned on using a CA18 since its smaller and cheaper, but if the sr20 is no heavier I would go with it. thanks for any help!

I don't know about the CA, but the SR w/ tranny should weigh in at around 490lbs. I remember Sport Compact Car gave that weight, and said that their KA without a tranny weighed 493lbs.

I suspect that the CA will weigh a little more than the SR, since it is iron block and the SR is aluminum.

hmm, conflicting reports. This is what stumped me since the CA is physicaly smaller, but has the iron block. Some people say it still is a bit less than the SR some say more some say right about even

Also I was looking around after i posted this last night and it seems that the guys on se-r.net had at least a good number for the SR non-turbo. A guy had one shipped ant it was 267 pounds, also 2 seperate reports of shipped trannies weighing just under 100 pounds. And Grass Roots Motorsports lists the the SR20det engine/trans weighing 390 pounds, if we figure 100 for the trans and an extra 23 pounds for the turbo/manifold this jives with the weight for the non-turbos. I read about that article where the SR20det weighed 3 pounds less with trans than the KA long block, but they must have meant 393 not 493. If the KA really did weigh 493 with just 4 cylinders and aluminum head, it would make it 33 pounds HEAVIER than an all iron Ford 5.0 V8(460 pounds)

After finding all this info last night I couldnt find a thing on the CA! Has anyone here ever shipped one? Thanks again guys, I hope this is useful for everyone

So which of those links in your search tell of the weight of the ca18 silvia? Not to call you out or anything, but an aluminum block is always going to weigh less than a similarly designed iron block.

CA is a good bit smaller, though, but i think you're right. it's not smaller-enough to make up for the iron vs. aluminum debacle.

yeah I tried every combination on google of
ca18det
ca18
weight
weigh
weighs
but all I came up with were those same links for car weights. As for aluminum vs. iron blocks in general, going to an aluminum block typicaly saves 30% weight, this is the usual case for chevy and ford V8s. You would think the weight savings would be more but keep in mind that they have to use a larger mass of aluminum than they did iron to make up for the loss of rigidity. So all things being equal, depending on how much smaller the ca18 is dimensionaly to the SR the weights may still be about even. I'll post too if I find out first, good stuff to know
