A NHTSA Study on Safety and Vehicle Weight and Size

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a study examining the relationship between vehicle weight and safety. The study concluded that "Weight reductions in passenger cars, lighter vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) increased the risk of fatal crash involvement." The federal study "examined fatality data from 1995-2000 involving 1991-1999 model vehicles."

NHTSA clearly needs to carefully weigh the negative safety consequences that would result from any regulatory policy changes mandating or encouraging further reductions in vehicle weight.
