Traction
Is there any sort of calculation to determine the best tyre width for a specific vehicle weight to acheive the best traction?
I understand that the wider a tyre is, the more surface area touching the ground, which means less pressure on each square inch of contact patch, which would be bad for traction. I can see how wider tyres would be benificial for cornering, where tyres get loaded with more force from the centrifugal force caused by cornering. Is there a medium where the traction created by using wider tyres is actually detrimental to the traction by the tyre having less "bite" from not having as much pressure on the contact patch as a smaller width tyre would have, on the same weight car? Is it true that a tyre of a certain width, which is a soft compound would have the same traction as a smaller width tyre of harder compound? Or is it the other way around?

There's no general formula to linking tire width, vehicle weight and traction.
What exactly do you mean by traction? When we speak of traction, we're generally talking about how well the tire grips in straight line braking. The wider, softer compound tire will stop the quickest but width must be balanced with weight of the tire/wheel combination as heavier rotational weight will lengthen braking distance. Their is a balance between air pressure and contact area if you were setting up a car for a track day. The best way to reach the balance is to start out at + 10 psi over normal street pressure and experiment from there having a pyrometer handy to check tire temperatures. Different tires will have different "sweet spots" where they have optimal grip. |

cool thanks, just another traction related question,
What would be a good width tyre to be able to accelerate fairly hard with a 700hp motor and 550Nm of torque?
