Question 1987 E23 heating system

The push-buttons on the heating control panel won't listen anymore. I suspect a vauum leak but have heard the vacuum hoses are buried deep in inside the dash. Is this above the repair capability of a moderately mechanical DIYer? Any tips about where to start? I've got a vacuum pump that can be attached for testing purposes and leak detection.

E23 Heater

Major Problem!!!
The centre console along the top of the trans tunnel has to be removed.
Start from the back & remove air grilles.
2 screws.
Then the gear lever cover, the one that says P R N D (3) 2 1.
2 or 3 screws underneath and then screws at either side of front. Passenger side and drivers side.
This may not help you as the problem lies within the electrics. At least it did with mine.
Are the switches lighting up when pushed in??
Is there any noise from the control flaps when you change from one direction to another eg. up, vent down?? If you have either of these probs then have the switches checked first.
I can gather some more info for you but I need to talk to the guy who assisted me with mine.
