hard starting

My '99 Rodeo has become harder to start for the past 5 months. I have to crank the engine about 3 to 4 times to get it going where as before it would start right away.

I recently had the spark plugs and distributor cap replaced with no better results. A co-worker suggested that it might be the fuel pump pressure and hooked his fuel pressure gague to the fuel port. When the key was put into the ON position, the fuel pressure went to 45PSI for about 1 second, then went back to 0 PSI.

Is this the correct pressure output from the pump and is it normal for the pressure to drop back to 0 PSI if the engine is not on?

You had your cap replaced! HA! Plugs yes, but the +98 have a have coils over each plug.

Also, it sounds like you found the problem already, that is, you have a bad fuel pressure regulator. Common problem on 98-99 Isuzu's.

Is there a way to test the fuel pressure regulator to confirm it is bad before replacing it?

Re: hard starting

Well I took a look at the manual, I have the elctronic verision which is hard to find things in, and I can't find anything on how to test it.

I have the instuction on the removal. which are pretty straight forward.

1. Depressurize the fuel system
2. disconnect the battery
3. remove the fuel pump relay
4. remove the pressure regulator hose form the fuel preesure regulator.
remove the 2 bolts from the protector that secures the common chamber.
6. remove the fuel pressure regulator attaching screw.
7. remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail.

disassembly

1. remove the 0ring from the FPR
2. lossen the swivel nut
3. remove the fuel return line from the FPR,
4. Remvoe the oring from the fuel return line. the oring may be left inside the FPR instead of on the fuel return line.

Re: hard starting

Thanks for the info on this matter. I checked with Kragen Auto parts online and saw they are charging $242.00 for a replacement regulator. ouch.
