Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72 "Jochen Rindt"
I would build the Lotus 72 of Jochen Rindt, Austria first formula 1 world champion and the first posthum world champion at all.
Jochen Rindt died 05.09.1970 with training to Italy GP. The basis model is the lotus 72 of Tamiya. Some changes must be made. The Decals are frome MTR SPEED. First some photos of the Lotus 72 ....and now to the model ......chrome was removed greet Kurtl |

Ah that "guy" is Jochen Rindt!
![]() Very nice project Kurtl. I always fancied having a go at this conversion myself. No need now, I can just sit back and follow your masterful work. |

Going to be a brilliant project for one of racing's great losses.
Can't wait to see the first coats of Gold Leaf Red.

Re: Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72 "Jochen Rindt"
Maybe you could make the wingless version that poor Mr. Rindt was driving when he crashed at Monza? I have never personally seen a picture of it though so a reference may be hard to find.
Just a thought....

Re: Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72 "Jochen Rindt"
Hi kurtl,
Looks good! I'm new here (first post) and I'm hoping to do this conversion over the winter as I also have the MTR decals. I've been studying the kit and 72 photos for a while and I think the most difficult part of the project to scratchbuild will be the cockpit fairing. You'll now doubt know it was made in one piece of clear acrylic as was the JPS but had a larger screen area (unpainted part) I'm hoping to make this part as my first home vacforming project as I eventually also want to do the JPS 72 too and it should also work for this. I'm going to try to mould it in clear polystyrene, then paint it on the inside as per the originals. John S. |

Hello John,
thanks, exactly that I surveyed. I hope to find a solution. I have unfortunately still no experience with vacforming. Greet Kurtl |

Re: Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72 "Jochen Rindt"
It'll be my first vacform experience as I've only just made the vacbox!
![]() Two more tips for you if I may? 1. The inner cockpit panels need to be sheeted over to cover the inboard front brake mounting holes near the feet, as they were smooth inside. 2. I decided to re-scribe the oval shaped panels on the pantoon sides as they're raised from the surface and not very good - uneven - worn molds maybe? I spent about 15mins on each side with just an ordinary pin carefully working my way around the original mold line. The originals were recessed and it will make paint polishing and sanding easier and they won't stand proud through the Gold Leaf side decals. I also shallow drilled out the 4 small panel boltheads as they were on the original. IIRC, the JPS 72D did have bolt heads that stood proud of the surface. Good luck, John |

Re: Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72 "Jochen Rindt"
Kurtl,
Another question for you that I forgot about! How are you going to do the rear wheels...this looked like another problem for me as the inside face is conical. I reckon it may be worth building something using a Lotus 49 wheel as the base? John |
