Cam Gears
hello everyone,
if i get a obx or aem cam gear, will that produce any more horsepower and what is a carm gear for anyway? i have a 99 civic sohc engine. thanks I have a aem cai, and im getting dc sports headers and a hi flow cat to accompany my 2.25 custom cat back muffler.

cam gears can give you or lose you HP if you dont know how to tune them, without a dyno to tune it on, you'll be doing alot of driving, changing setting, driving, change setting, etc.
cam gears attach to the end of you camshaft and can be adjusted to either retard or advance the time that your valves will open or close. But you will need to have someone do it for you at a dyno or do it yourself if you have enough experience.

so how much gains should i get with one and which brand is the best?
i heard that to get the ones with 4 or more bolts so it wont slip off.

You will not see much at all. The primary purpose of the cam gears are to change valve overlap, which you cannot change on a sohc motor with cam gears
. I would spend the $ on something else.

how bout some accel spark plug wires and ngk spark plugs?
will that help out some? which spark plugs are good? what else can i do for my engine, N/A, no turbo or supercharger shit.

you can up the comp ratio to like 11.5, put a big camshaft in there, then a cam gear, high flow intake mani, bored tb, port polish, high flow fuel rail, pressure regulator, bigger injectors, if you getting bigger cam, then you should upgrade your valvetrain, and if you up your comp ratio then youll probably getting pistons, then might as well deck the block and get rods too, knifedge the crank, actually most all motor engine are bored out, that would help. theres more stuff you can do, but i got lazy, so yeah thats a few things you can do

How much are you looking to spend? The things civickiller mentioned are not cheap. IMO the best hp jump for the money is nitrous. Ok alot of ppl say " no, don't use nitrous it will bolw your motor" . Well they are right in that if you fail to educate yourself about it and how to use it first. You could prob. run a 50 shot with absolutely no problems what so ever. But if you want power on demand all the time you will have to drop some serious $.
You can probably find a camshaft, possibly srings and retainers, a intake manifold and a fuel pressure regulator. That would help quite a bit. The fuel rail and injectors are not needed, the stock ones will support more power than you will be adding with these things. Is your car a five speed? If so then a light weight flywheel (I suggest chromoly, not alumn.) will help add a little pwer as well as increase the acceleration of you car. Also a set of underdrive pullies will increase the power a little but not significantly. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more ?'s .

IMO a cam gear is a waste of money on a sohc motor. The cam shaft is a good idea though.
The camshaft won't be hard to install if you have a slight clue as to what you are doing. Try this link quickhonda . Hope this helps
