1/12 Porsche 910 progress thread

Been working on this project - a 1/12 Porsche 910. Base kit is the Tamiya kit. I decided to push my machining capabilities on this warmup for some other 1/12 kits. I'm envisioning this as a restored vintage racer and I'm using a Gunnar Jeanette restored 910 as a reference. I decided to make the body a spyder version, like the Porsche 908/2. Since the back end would be very visible, I'll super detail the engine compartment.

This is the basic transmission with machined stud/bolt combo. After seeing some progress on the engine, I wish I had left the bolts in the natural brass color.

Here's a shot of the body. Still a lot of work to do.

This is in the nose, forward of the pedals. Brake fluid reseviors and master cylinders. Later, I added an aluminum bulkhead in here.

Here's the fuel injection pump with nice machined bits.

Here's a couple of shots of the almost completed engine. Ran out of tubing for the plugs, so I'll take a break on this until more arrives. Almost all the fasteners are machined or P/E.

Updates to follow.

Dayum Ken, that's some other level of detail.

You have a lathe at home?

Fantastic work! I'm already looking forward to the next update!
Did you use brass hex rod for the bolts? if so, where did you get it from?

Looks awesome. How do you machine the bolt heads and stuff, a lathe or milling machine?

Re: 1/12 Porsche 910 progress thread

I have a milling machine with a rotary table and a lathe. I made the bolts by turning a 1/8" brass rod down to about 0.070" in the hex-shaped area, then turned the adjacent areas down to about 0.025". I could have taken the chucked brass over to the milling machine to mill the hex flats on the rotary table, but that would have taken alot of time. I opted to remove the brass part from the lathe and sanded the hex flats by putting the part in a pin vise that has a hex head end. Using the pin vise hex head as an index, I sanded the six flats on each bolt head. Oh hell, I'll make a tutorial to explain it better.

Robrex - I couldnt find any hex rods of the size I wanted, so had to go this route. At least I can make any size hex I want.

Superb work! I've especially love the fabric inner skinning - you've obviously spent as long as me perusing the Gunnar website! What fabric did you use? I've tried experimenting with very fine GRP cloth (used for R/C gliders) and PVA but I've found it tricky to get the shape to conform.

How did you groove the top of the carb velocity stack bases - are they milled?

I don't know what to say. The level of detail you lathe owners are achieving these days leaves me speechless. Umm... incredible!
