Miami Vice Cars
Hi, I've been thinking about doing a scene with the daytona, testarossa and the boat. Which Testarossa model would be the best, Tamiya or the Monogram version? For the daytona I'm using the Fujimi Enthusiast as I believe this to be better than the Monogram version. For the boat I've been trying to find a speed boat from the 1980's, but having been struggling to find one in 1/24. Also, does anyone know of any men that I could use?

The "Daytona" in the series, as you know, was reallly a fiberglass conversion body on a Corvette chassis. This real conversion had some dimensional differences from an actual Daytona and the Monogram kit of the Miami Vice Daytona was accurate in that it used the Corvette chassis. I would go with the Monogram kit to make the scene as "real" as possible. Ferrari supplied the TR to replace the "Daytona" because they were suing the maker of the conversion and they didn't want it being confused with the real thing.

Monogram or Tamiya? Oh come on, do you really have to ask?
 If you haven't found it yet, a bit of history: Miami Vice Ferraris For figures, you'll have to modify some. Fujimi makes a figure set that would probably be a good place to start. You're almost definately not going to find a suitable offshore gofast in 1/24. That's a scratchbuild item. Also, if I remember right, it'll be larger than the cars, so in 1/24, it's a fair sized model.

The offshore boat in the series was a 38ft Wellcraft Scarab KV although in some early episodes they used a Chris-Craft Stinger. In 1/24 that's about 50cm long.
Monogram made a kit of the Wellcraft in about 1/35 scale (as "Miami Vice Offshore Power Boat") and it has been reissued a couple of times in different colors than the Miami Vice livery. -Mikko

Pm me...I think I have a scarab..If you want to make it accurate to the TV show, use the monogram versions, because they are the kit cars on vette chassis. If you want to make the cars realistic ferrais, use the tamiya. Good luck.

You deffinently want the Monogram Daytona, becouse of the Corvette chassis and all, but you want to get the Tamiya Testorossa. there both 1:24 scale so there's no issue with a size difference.

Isn't there is also a 1/16 scale version of the White Testarossa by Monogram?

It might be unthinkable today, but I used Fujimi's Enthu. Daytona kit and converted the front to make it look like the Miami Vice version. What a waste, but the kit was readily available back then.
I believe R/M is reissuing its Miami Vice series this year, so the kits shouldn't be so hard to find. I do recommend Tamiya, because it'll be much less stress to put together. As for the boat, I think you want a slightly smaller one to create the deapth-of-field effect.
