Rotors and brake pads
Anyone with instructions on replacing rotors and brakes on a 1994 G20? It's a 94 G20 Silver manual with about 113K.
I bought the car as a winter driver and also as a learning tool in fixing cars. Any good reading material that I can look at? First - brakes and rotors. Second - suspension. Third - exhaust/intake. It's funny... I got it as a winter driver and after driving it for a while... I noticed how much fun driving it has been - good power/torque. Thanks for any info. |

Do you have an FSM? It should be covered there.
It's quite easy to replace pads / rotors. Jack up the car, secure it (don't work on the car if it's held up only by a scissor jack!) Remove the wheel (you should loosen the lug nuts a bit before you jack up the car). Now, if you're just replacing the pads, it's a bit easier. But if you're doing both then I'd staret with the disc (no, it makes no point doing it the other way around )You will need to remove the two bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the hub (the thing that turns when you turn the steering wheel), hang the caliper somewhere in the wheel well so that the brake line is not stressed / stretched, etc. I'm not sure, but probably at this point the pads will fall out from the bottom of the caliper. Or maybe not. Anyway, at this time you will have full access to the brake disk. It's not held in place buy anything and should come right off. If not, persuade it with a hammer (lightly and evenly on all sides). Then install a new disc and viola! Now you'll have to reinstall the caliper with the bracket (you DO have a torque wrench, right?) If you're able to change the pads from the bottom of the caliper, do it. If not, read on. To remove the pads (caliper bracket and caliper all installed in place) you will need to remove one of the bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket (well, not directly to the bracket, but to the pin that slides in the bracket) and "flip" the caliper open. Although maybe with the USDM calipers you will have to remove both bolts). You should then be able to quite easily remove / replace the pads. If the caliper piston is sticking out too much and doesn't allow the caliper to be reinstalled with new pads you will have to push the piston in. It's not a good idea trying to force the brake fluid back through the ABS system, so I would recommend loosening the beleeding valve, and later bleeding the whole system, at the same time replacing tha brake fluid - it won't hurt, trust me ) So then just insatall everything back. Oh, and you need to use a special glue-like substance when reinstalling the bolts that hold the caliper to the pin - it's used on the tread and acts like a glue so that the bolts don't come loose.I hope this helps, with questions please ask away. Good luck. P.S. is this a FAQ material or what?

Thanks.
Thanks for the replies... that should get me started.
![]() I'll have to dig out my FSM - it's for an earlier G20 but it should be very similar. |
