rotors and brake pads - help
I own a 2001 Jetta (5 speed/2.0l stock parts) and I need to replace the front disk brakes and looks like the rotors as well. I know from a disasterous experience that I was unable to get the piston to collapse when I tried to change my back brake pads a while ago. Can anyone please let me know if the front brakes pose the same problem and also any advice on changing the rotors - I have never had to change these on a car before. Thank you.

Re: rotors and brake pads - help
No the fornts should compress easily. The backs are designed to incorporate the emergency brake so that they must be turned with a special tool when compressing.
Some tips on changing the rotors. When changing your rotors you must completely remove the calipers and caliper brackets. Make sure that you hang them from something like the coil spring so as not to put too much pressure on the fluid lines. There is a phillips screw that holds the rotor to the hub this is just used for placement as your lugs really hold everything together. Spray the screw down with some lubricant (Both sides). I used an impact tool with a phillips bit to get the screws out (The one you hit on the back with a hammer). Be ready to drill this screw out and tap the threads if it strips (Thats what I had to do on the right side). Clean the rust off the hub with a wirebrush (You want the contact area to be clean so the rotor won't wobble.) Also use some anti-sieze compound between the hub and new rotor. Order new screws from potterman http://www.parts4vw.com. Make sure you use anti-sieze compound when replacing the rotor screws. Put every thing back and make sure you torq everything properly. It is important to torq your lug nuts properly as well overtighting them will misalign the rotor and cause problems down the road. I think that its 100 lbs for the caliper brackets, 60 lbs for the caliper screws and 85 lbs for the lugs. (Verify in the service manual) Refer to the service manual for specific instructions, these are just meant to be tips. |
