funny noise

whenever i start my car first thing in the morning, i notice about 1-2 seconds of harsh sound then it goes away, i'm no expert but, i'm pretty sure the noise is due to the lack of oil circulating for these few brief moments, my question is - is this normal for the sr20de? have any of you guys experienced this? and if i'm completely wrong, corrections and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

well, my car sounds like a diesel for the first couple of seconds after starting up, then it goes away. All I do is wait for some 30 seconds before touching the gas pedal, and then not going over 3000 - 3500 rpm until the car warms up. As far as i'm concerned, the noise is normal.

If you mean a funny sort of rattling yucky sound the first few seconds when starting from cold I know what you mean, I'm not sure myself what does that hopefully someone here does. I brought it to a mechanic and he was baffled had no idea what it could be.

The two things that rattle on first start up due to lack of oil pressure is the timing chain and the conrod bearings. The first thing to do is change the oil and put a good oil filter on. Cheap filters drain back into the motor so it takes the oil pump a few seconds to fill the filter up and build pressure up and in this time there is no pressure on the bearings or timing chain tensioner, allthough the chain tensioner has a non return device in it the chain can still rattle when it is streched.

There are two different awful noises that can occur at start-up.

If it is a brief squeal, it's the starter. It's common and will last seemingly forever in this condition.

If it is a clatter, neither the chain nor the bearings. It is the hydraulic valve lash adjusters (HVLAs). This also doesn't seem to affect the life of the engine. People have tried different oils and filters with various levels of success to alieviate this noise.

The cause has been greatly debated. It's my belief that oil leaks (internally) past the chain tensioner seal and this causes the HVLAs to collapse slightly. Upon start-up the noise stops when they receive enough oil.

Change to Genuine Nissan oil filter. Like it was posted earlier it will prevent the drain back problem. I saw it for myself yesterday.

When you take your oil fliter off you will see it is really nasty looking if you use a cheesy filter.....

Actually, all name brand filters (and most private label) have an anti-drainback valve. It's just a rubber flap.

About 2.5 years ago we held the Texas Oil Filter Massacre at my house and cut about a half dozen new filters apart. The OEM was 2nd best. The Mobil 1 was clearly superior to everything.

Fram sucked.

The rest were pretty much similar.

The filter is unlikely to cause HLVA bleed down.

Yeah, Mobil 1 filters were noticeably better than anything we've looked at.

Somewhat regularly I have big gatherings of SR20 pilots at my house. We've been doing that for some time. Kerry and I used to feed everyone, but that got a big expensive, so now we collect about $5 or so from everyone and Kerry gets soda, beer, munchies, etc. We usually work on several cars at that time.

Thanks P10DET, that oil filter report was very intresting reading.

I have nearly always brought Fram filters and they are our major supply at my work for our engines.

Just shows that even being a so called "name brand" can let you down.

I will be asking there sales rep today when i get to work, and will see what his reply is.
