Broke Cam Shaft

I have a 97 Lumina with the 3100 V6 engine (3.1) with 115000 miles on it. I bought the car not running, Well I found out the Cam Shaft is broke in two. Can Anybody tell me if this is a common problem with this engine and if its a cam or block or bearing problem ? Can the engine be rebuilt ?
