engine/tranny swap advice

I have a 1989 Metro LSi 3cyl/auto with a great engine & tranny, but too many other problems to fix. I can get my hands on a 1995 Metro 3cyl/STANDARD for little money. MY QUESTIONS - Can I transplant the 1989 setup (both engine & tranny) into the 1995 w/o alot of touble? and if so, would it be possible (and easier) to somehow drop the subframes out of each and swap w/o seperating engine/tranny combos? thanks!

The motor will bolt right into a 95 with no problem. Just bring ALL the elecronics (wiring and ECU) over to the new one. The sub-frames are in-compatible with each other, and would create a weak point if seperated and re-welded.

odds are pretty good you can do this. But here are somethings to consider before doing the work. make sure all the engine mounts are in the same locations, odds are your not going to have those with both engine and tranny, especially with a auto from standard.

you can easly check by looking under the batt plate. the next thing is to check the wiring harness, and make sure all the things line up. if those are good and you decide that you do want to go through with it heres most of what needs to be done.

both engins out
bother transaxles
take out the halfshafts
remove the shift cable from 89
remove the shift assembly(shifter and things, make sure that will fit. i think there is interior conflictions)
take out the old ecu
take out the at controler
and move it all over to the other car.

its a good 4 or more weeks work man

i just moved a 1.3 gsi engine into my 94 metro, and they're pretty much the same car. Your looking at completly diff models.

My advice if you can use the 95, don't go with the transfer.

but it can work

Re: engine/tranny swap advice

I am in process of assembling a 91 sprint, with a 3 cylinder and a 5 speed. I have a much nicer condition 93 metro that I could have used, but it had the auto tranny in it, and thus did not have the provisions on the front frame for the 5 speed mount. Rather than spend hours i don't have goofing around with drilling and welding and so on, I just found the 91, and am transferring body parts from the 93 as needed to complete the job. The engine is from my 89 Ice Racer. I also discovered along the way, that there are minor interior conflicts with the shifter and so on, and you need to put pedals in, or take them out, its just ugly and not worth the hassle. Best to stick with the same basic model of car, and go from there. Otherwise you end up like
