97 nissan maxima weird starting issues... HELP!!

Alrighty, i have read at least 2 posts on here, have helped me a little but i have a little different symtems as they did

I have a problem with my car starting,
This issue willl happen cold or hot.
every time i start my car....(it runs decent after i start it) but somtimes it will just turn over and over, i can turn the key off turn it over again...for maybe 15 seconds and it wont start....I have found that due to my driving habits...i will get in the car and autimaticlly either turn on my headlights...or hit my brakes...if i however dont turn my lights on or hit my break lights, and shut my heater/ac fan off... the car will start up normally everytime...but the moment i turn on my head lights or hit my break lights or have that fan on..or i am guessing anything that take a drain on the battery.....it wont start. From the sounds of it, it sounds like my sensor for the crank...or the cam sensor... the engine light is on...and i get like 3 codes...of which i will have to get back to you on... for what those codes are. I noticed b4 this started to happen it did take a few extra cranks to start....so instead of fireing after 1 sec...it will take 3-4 seconds to fire(cold/hot)

I really dont want to spend alot of money at the dealer, i have done much work on cars.....so i think with some help to get pointed in the right direction i should be able to figure this out...

Oh yeah promlem number to.....everytime i start my car.... or turn it over...it likes to make a weird grinding/muble niose...and then any time under like 500 RPM it will make a low end noise...
is there any connections...

HELP!!

Wead

I had a recent problem with long cranks in my 98 Max. For me it was corrosion on the ground for the car intself. This is unfortuantely located in the transmission. So it will need to be pulled and cleaned off and put back in if this is your problem. If you live in a place where it snows and the weather is shitty, most likely this is your problem. Costs about $500-$600 to get it fixed. I just had it done and mine starts like a charm! Otherwise I would say it is ECU related, but investigate this first and don't let anyone tell you your are crazy when you tell them this. It is true! Stupid Nissan put the ground IN the tranny (Duh!) where it mates with the motor and it has a tendancy to corrode in poor weather areas of the country, so they never did a full recall on it and not all dealers are familiar with this problem. But from the symptoms you described it sounds like you have this problem, especially since you replaced everything else I was told to replace. I wish you the best!

P.S. The code you are getting is probably something related to fuel continuously being pumped into the motor over the course of the long cranks. Typically plugs foul, or something related to that.

3 codes...

I am acutally getting three codes....two of witch i have found in the book, and and one i have know idea what it is....
They both are realated to the crank postion senser. I also have noticed now that my subs are back in my car, that the lights dimmer evertime the bass hits....the manuel says to check and make sure battery and alt...are good first...and i know i have worn my batt pretty good...

Re: 97 nissan maxima weird starting issues... HELP!!

I had the crank position sensor go on my maxima about 8 hours after purchasing it, and my problems were similar, though mine problems were generally trying to start a hot car (like i went into the gas station or something). Luckily, i was able to take it back to the dealer and he hooked me up on the repair, so I'm not sure exactly how much it cost.

This may be part of your problem.

As for the power issues, if everything seems dimmer, and your lights drastically react to simple things like turning on your blinker or your subs hitting, you may have lost a cell in your batter. This will also cause a drag on the starter and it will take a bit longer to start up and there will be a definite change in the sound of the starter. I had this problem over the summer and was just a matter of changing the battery.

Hope any of this helps you out.

Sucks to hear about that hit to the wallet.

You know, one thing that can help you from blowing the battery due to the sub is pick up a capacitor for the amp, it'll help keep the draw off of the battery and helps the sound of the bass hit and sustain. My buddy has one on his 12" JL w3 and it sounds awesome. I'm looking to get one on my sub sometime soon.

word.
