'97 Accord runs rough at 2000 rpm
Hey folks. My '97 Accord runs rough (like it is slightly missing) at 2000 rpm. Under and over 2000 rpm it runs fine. The front motor mount was replaced a few weeks back (reduced the vibration slightly). I replaced the plugs, cap and rotor a few weeks back as well? The car has about 150k miles. Any ideas?

Re: '97 Accord runs rough at 2000 rpm
hey, i just had this same exact problem. Hopefully you ahve a different problem though. It turned out to be a rod bearing that was about to go. you can either have bearing replaced, have the whole engine rebuilt, or have a new engine put in. a new engine is actually new to you. it'll probably be pulled from a wrecked car. i had a friend do it for it for $1500, normally runs about $3000. if it vibrates while under load holding a constant 2000 rpm, then it's probably the bearing. for me it was hard to detect while reving to 2000 while sitting in a parking lot, i had to have a load on the engine. good luck.

Hey Mitcheal,
I hate to say it, but it is vibrating when a load is applied at 2000 rpm. This is the last thing I need. The transmission went out this past summer - long story ($1900 to get that repalced). I guess If I can find somebody to do the work for $1500 then I should be in good shape for the next 150K.. |

Re: '97 Accord runs rough at 2000 rpm
well, the only way to be absolutely sure is to take the bottom end apart and take a look. if you're gonna go that far, then you might as well replace all the bearings. no point in having a new one and 3 old ones. and if you're going to replace all the bearing, some will argue that you might as well rebuild it, which will cost about as much as a new (used) engine. it's all preference and how much risk you want to take. who's to say that if you replace one bearing that a few months later antoher one won't die.
