Unhappy Oil blow-by?

I just bought a 1988 Jeep Wrangler that the previous owner did a V8 swap. The jeep has a 305/V8 and a TH350 tranny. My question is there is oil on the valve covers around the valve cover breathers, is the oil blowing past the breathers? If so how do I stop it?I think the valve cover gaskets need replaced anyway. Any sugestions would be helpful. Thanks.

You may want to start by investigating your PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. The theory behind the operation is to pull a vacuum on one valve cover (via the pcv valve and a connection to a good vacuum source - i.e. intake manifold, base of carb etc) and grab the fresh air via the breather on the other valve cover. Fresh air in (not blow by out) one breather, through the crankcase and burn the unused/blowby again. If your pcv valve doesn't "jiggle" (like a ball in a paint can) when you shake it, it's stuck and needs to be replaced. This will then let the vacuum work as it should and pull air into the engine (via the valve cover breather) rather the blow it out the breather due to the pressure genereted by piston motion. This may be WAY more info than you wanted, but it's a place to start none the less, PLUS pcv valves are inexpensive - $2-$5. Good luck!

That sounds like my problem. I don't have a pcv system. I just have a breather on both valve covers. I have an Edlebrock carb and Eldlebrock intake. I know there is a big vacume(sp?) tube from the carb to the brake booster, I will see if there is another fitting on my carb to run the PCV hose to. Thanks for the advise! I'll try to go looking around a junkyard to see if i can get the plugs and the line. Also, I just tried to get two more new breathers, since the old ones are soaked in oil. When I got home and tried them, they would not fit. Both are the push and turn style with the ears(no grommet). All that I saw was the one size, even in the Summit catalog. Where can I find one to fit?

Re: Oil blow-by?

sounds like someone put really old valve covers on that engine, plug the passenger side vent and install a pvc on the left one.
