oil blow by
I have a 92 Ranger w/ the 4.0L in it and about 2 weeks ago the check engine light came on after about 45 minutes of driving, than it never came on again after I shut off the truck, so about a week ago I took it down for its emissions test and it failed big time on Carbon Monoxide and almost failed on hydrocarbons, so I took it to the shop and was told it needed a new ACT(air charge temperature sensor) and a new oxygen sensor. I replaced both of them and than took it back down for emissions immediately after and it passed with very good readings. On the way back home from it passing emissions my check engine light came back on, and for about the past 2 weeks it also had a problem of cranking 2-3 times before starting when the engine is cold. So I called the shop after getting home, and they said bring it back today, so I did. They said it was reading the same code for the ATC sensor so they pulled it out and it was soaked in oil again because the engine is having an oil blow by and that was also causing the starting problem. They said it wouldn't cause no other problems other than the ATC sensor would need replacing right before whenever it needs emission testing and that the only way to fix it would be to rebuild the motor. My question is what I was told by the shop correct, or do you think they're trying to get me to cause damage to the motor for I'll have to have the motor rebuilt or replaced, and hopefully have them do it? I know shops a lot of times are not always trustworthy, and it is very hard for me to believe anything any of the shops in my area tell me as they are all a bunch of liars, so any suggestions or advice would be apprecriated. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS FOR I DON'T RUIN A MOTOR POSSIBLY. I would have no problem with rebuilding the motor or replacing in no way could afford to do that anytime soon, probably not for a year or two.

Is the air charge teperature sensor in the air intake? That is what I would assume. The only way I could see that blow by was causing oil to soak the sensor is if the PCV valve is connected to the intake before the sensor. Or if you have a K&N air filter and recently oiled it you could have sprayed too much oil on it, they are know too effect MAF sensors if you do this. To check for blowby you can do a compression test, or if you have access to an air compressor and can get the tester from an auto parts store you can do a cylinder leakage test. You may also want to check your oilk level. If you have too much oil in it you may have this problem as well. You could even check your air intake for obstructions, if you have a bird or something in the intake ( hey it happens) the engine could be sucking too much air through the PCV valve, probably not likely bvut you never know, hopefully someone here has had your problem and can tell you what fixed thiers

The ACT Sensor is actually located on the lower intake manifold, not in the air intake. Its supposed to not only affect air flow, but also oil pressure and all. I know the PCV valve is good and isn't causing the problem, along with I don't have no after market air intake system or filter. The truck has just the regular stock air intake system with nothing more than a Fram Air Filter. So I doub't your post will do me much good, so anyone else with ideas or comments or answers to my question please post it. Thanks for replying though.
