smokin bad

What would be the cause of smoke in this scenario. I can be going say 55, and let off the gas. I slow down to about 30, and if i press the gas pedal, no matter how hard, i get a 007 smoke screen behind me. I recently had the head rebuilt, with all new valve guides, could they have done it wrong? Thanx in advance.

Ummmmmmm piston rings? But if it was the rings wouldn't it do it through the whole RPM range?

My ZC does the same thing and its really pissing me of. Its embarrasing. But whenever I use the engine to slow down (even a tiny bit) and go to press the gass a bunch of smoke comes out of my exhaust. A couple weeks before it started I did a compression and leakdown test and it did real good. So unless something happened to the rings all of the sudden, I dont understand what else it could be. Oh yea, it also burns oil pretty bad now.

Re: smokin bad

what color is the smoke?

first guess would be the PCV valve. if its stuck, you are sucking oil into the manifold, and that would explain the smoke when you punch it. its the simpliest and cheapest fix. if that doesnt work, look to your piston rings and your valve seals, they are the only other way to get oil into the combustion chamber.

if the smoke is whitesh, youve got water getting in, which could be getting sucked in because of a blown headgasket, cracked block, cracked head, or even a crack in your throttle body or Idle Speed Control Valve. check for coolant pressure with a pressure gauge and pump, if the system loses pressure too fast, and you dont see any coolant dripping, youve got an internal leak. thats a quick way to find it.

if its black, you are running too rich, try changing your ignition components, or cleaning your airfilter. those are quick fixes for that too. if it still smokes black, then youve got serious fuel issues.

Thanks for the reply man. Whats really wierd is this... A few weeks ago (before the smoke), for no reason at all, i decided to check out the PCV valve and it was clogged to hell and the line from it was collapsed. I replaced both and thats about when it started to happen. Im sure its just coincidence but i was confused. Im gonna do another compression, and leakdown test and see what happens though. Its definitly oil and not coolant. I guess in my case, the most likely cause is the valve seals but im goonna check it all out. Thanks again.

Re: smokin bad

check the other vent tube going to the valve cover then, it may be that. i would check all the venting tubes, since you said it seemed to start after changing the valve.

If you have the head rebuilt, and dont rebuild the block, the new head seals and such with the old rings raise the compression, causing oil to burn. It has happened to me, in an old honda, and I just compensated by putting in heavier oil, 10w40 in a car that takes 10w30. And it did get a bit better after a short time, it would used to burn almost 3/4 quart a week, then it went down to about a quart every 3 tanks of gas.

mine smokes too still...
i got the head re-built and everything was fine, then a couple months ago it started smoking AGAIN! BAH!
but... its only when i shift gears at high RPMS (5 - 6 grand) that i can see it in the rear view mirror, its just like a quick puff, and i know its oil cuz i lose like 2 litres a month or so, and i also have a new PCV valve so i doubt thats it, it doesnt smoke at all on idle either and me and my dad used like a 1/2 can of throttle body cleaner cleaning shit out, and boy did she smoke alot! went down the street and did a smoke show going 20 km/h lol turned around and couldnt see ne thing lol
but yea i dunno i'm just rambling now... cya

Derek has the same thing going on as me. The old gal is getting tired. She uses oil and between gears I get the puff of smoke at high RPMs. I just keep feeding her the oil. She's probably as loose as a full racing engine now but it'll be time for semi retirement probably next year.
