Question 89 diesel pressurizing coolant resevoir

I was just wondering what could be the problem on an 89 Jetta turbo diesel that is pressurizing the resevoir and shooting coolant out with the cap off. Is it a common problem the head gasket just blows, or is it more common that the head cracks? Any suggestions?
Thanx
