Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B

Hi all! Decided to start my second Formula 1 model. Picked this one up north on vacation to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix My last F1 model was Senna's Lotus Honda 99T, so sticking with a Senna theme, I picked the Mclaren MP4/5B from his championship season of 1990. I will be trying to really add some detail to this car now that I've had a few warm up models. Thanks for looking!

Re: Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B

TheDoc, Hobby Design makes a PE sheet for the MP4/5 (eBay 4/$16) that can be used for the MP4/5B. Some parts are different but some can be used (like tire stencil, wing end plates, brakes, some electronics, and more). It's a great deal for money. I got one but havent built it yet... Just thought you might wanna know... Cool thing that you got the one with driver/engineer set, I had to buy them separately.

Re: Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B

Thanks Doc (Lol that sounds strange to say). I had glanced at getting a PE kit but I didn't see much I would use honestly. I did pick up a seat belt kit from KA and will use the PE tire stencils I have left over from my Lotus 99T project. The seatbelts will be the first time I work with PE so that alone is going to be enough of a learning experience for me! The engineer/driver set is pretty cool though. I will probably only use the driver to make Senna, or may just use the helmet alone, I'm not sure yet.

Here is some progress. I started a few days ago and am just now getting some pics of it, so don't think I'm that fast

Nosecone removed:

Sidepods carbon fibered with SMS decals and logo decals from A Modelers:

Glued and puttied the side pieces of the body so I don't get a nasty seam like I did on the Lotus.

Re: Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B

Thanks Countach! Cleanliness is really my overall goal for this model. My last few projects have all been learning experiences and I'm really trying to grow with this one.

Here's some more progress:

Mocked up:

Probably the coolest part of the entire build for me, Senna's helmet It's a little rough, but it's so small it still looks awesome alongside the car. I decided to just use the helmet and not the entire figure since I'm not sure how well the figure would have turned out.

Re: Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B

Yokomo, the helmet wasn't too difficult to paint up. It was primarily decals so it wasn't too bad placing them although they took some coaxing to line up. The only thing I had issues with was the visor, but it turned out great.

Starting to really come together now! Engine is in place and all wired up.

Now for some body work and paint! I'm really happy how crisp the lines ended up being after taping them off.

Re: Tamiya Mclaren MP4/5B

Closing in Next post should be in the completed gallery. The body and the nosecone need clearing and that will be about it.
