What to do about rust?
Hey All had a quick question about rust forming on my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. On the passenger side of the car you can start to see rust forming. I travel on salty Illinois roads. I want to try and prevent it or start limiting it so it doesn't keep spreading. Any thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks

That rocker is gone. Best thing you can do is have the rocker replaced.

G'day, welcome to AF.
Sadly, that is not rust forming, that is rusted out. For all the rust you can see, there is 5-10 times as much inside the sill and other places in the car you can't see.

Re: What to do about rust?
Darn not good news. Do you think i should try and get rid of some of it. I know i can peel a little off if i use my shoe. This is the only part of the car that has rust. I've looked underneath the car as well and didn't see any. It's only on the rocker.
GRRR Thanks for the welcome Moppie |

Re: What to do about rust?
chances are if you look inside your rear wheel wells and along the seam where the rear bumper meets the quarter panel, you will notice you have some rust there. as far as the rockers go, all you can do is remove and replace the metal...if nothing else you could find some side skirts from a GT to cover the rust, but obviously that wont FIX it

I replaced my rear struts last weekend and didn't notice rust inside the rear wheel wells. That's not to say that it won't get there. Looks like I'll be doing some dumpster diving to find some replacement rocker panels... just a matter of finding the same paint color.. Thanks everyone for your help! |

Re: What to do about rust?
You should be able to find a small body shop that can cut that out and fabricate a new piece of metal on there. . . Little body filler and some paint and should be good as new. Can not imagine the cost would be too high, except for the red paint. No doubt those are done for though. Looks like a poke with a finger will go right through. The sooner it gets done the better because there is nothing that will stop the rust from spreading!
