2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

I am re-installing the original stock CD unit back into the D. There are four connections.

1) Antenna = No brainer
2) Gray harness, all wires in a braided cover= No brainer
3) Black harness, all wires in a braided cover= No brainer
4) A single wire in a braided cover with no connector on it = This is the one I can figure out where is goes. The Haynes Manual shows that there are 4 connections, but not what/where they are.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

Braided wire has an eyelet. It is attached to the back of the radio with a screw. It is a ground for the radio. Lok on the back of the radio and you will see the threads in the case.

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

Sorry for the confusion the wire itself isn't braided, it's in a black braided nylon cover. Just like the two sets that have a plug/connector on them. Also the wire has no eyelet on it, at least not now it doesn't.

Would this still be the ground wire? There is another plug area on the back on the radio, but nothing to plug into it.

Thank you for your assistance thus far.

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

Does the other area for a connector on the radio have a built in male spade connector? Does the single wire have a connector on the end that looks like a flat blade can be inserted into?

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

The single wire has no connector at all, don't remember what it had when it came out a few years ago. The other area for a connector on the radio looks to be about the size of a USB receptacle. Can't tell if there is any pins or not in it right now, but I don't see a blade in there at all or a blade receiver. Will have to look in the daytime.

This link shows the 5 connections, the antenna, the 2 harnesses, and 2 single plugs. The small red and white plug on the left looks like it would go into the small plug receptacle I was talking about. Found out this one is for the stereo wheel controls which this Durango doesn't have, hence I don't have this wire. Then there is small black one on the right which might be the ground wire or not? Plus there are the two blade like prongs on the back of the stereo case, might that be where you ground the radio to?

You can click on the image to enlarge it.

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

The small 2 pin connector is for a Durango with steerig whl mounted controls as the signal is supplied over the BUS. The single wire is the ground. The black platic cover should contain the female spade connector. You need to look inside the black cover on the end of the wire; from the picture it looks lie something is stuck in it. I'm enclosing 2 wiring diagrams for both the premium radio and the base radio and you will see what I am talking about.

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

Thanks for all your help, first thing in the morning I'll go out there and get this thing finished. One last question the female spade connector, would that attach to one of the blade like protrusions on the back on the radio housing?

Been working on the my 1996 Jeep ZJ, 2000 Jeep WJ and 2000 Durango over the last two days, Heck I even think I'm doing it in my sleep now. Funny how something so simple can seem so hard when you've been at it for 2 days.

I appreciate all your help and for your patience in dealing with me on this.

Re: 2000 Durango Stereo Wiring

Thank you, got every hooked up and put back together. Put a new battery in the D today, and everything worked great. This week-end it will get a tune up, oil change, etc, then will re-register it next week, and my son can start driving it. She's been sitting in storage since around Sept 2009, when I retired.

Again thanks for your help and patience it was and is greatly appreciated.
