I'm a freak

I'm new, don't hurt me.

Hi, for those who don't hurt me. I just got my first honda. I've had an:
84 Toyota 40R pickup (5-spd, traded for next car)
92 Dodge spirit (auto, nice ride, potential, bad tranny. still have)
90 Dodge 250 van (318 engine, fun, inhales gas. still have: no right windshield post after collision with protruding dumpster arm)
87 Buick Park Avenue (v6, quick to peg, blew 3 ring bearings b/c last owner hadn't changed oil in 6 years. still have.)
87 Ford Tempo (5-spd, got it for free, put clutch in it, beat hell out of it. ignition went bad. still have, will be rallied to death at local redneck fair.)

my stepfather tom gave me his 1996 honda civic DX hatchback. it's a five-speed, a/c, cassette, no power steering. it's got 93k on the odometer and he was orig owner. it got all the matinence done on it right on time, it's like a new car- including new car smell!

i finally have a car that i can "do things to"... and i will. I wanna kick all the stupid grand pricks and mustangs in town, as well as the ricer boys with stock engines and aluminum wings.

i've heard people tell me to do a b16 engine swap, but my friend dan says to turbo the engine i have now. i trust dan (86 300zx turbo, he rebuilt the tranny himself) and i think i want to take the car as far as i can and leave it as original as possible. i'm not going to remove the stock stereo, ad body kits, paint the car, tint the windows, put big-@#$ rims on it, or make the dashboard banana yellow. i want it FAST. the pretties may, may come later.

so- a list of potential upgrades:

cold air intake with cloth air filter
high-flow cat with mandrel bent exhaust
short shift kit
turbo (possibly t3/t4) with intercooler
brake upgrade with steel sheathed lines
from the 13" rims to 14" OEM honda's with performance yokohamas or other possibles
decent seats with 4-point harnesses
onboard computer running Redhat/Mandrake, tied to lcd and control module for mp3 playback and gps tracking
edit: oh yah, it doesn't have a tach either so i'm going to get a replacement dash insert with a tach.

this is a very, very rough idea of what i want to do, and there is much missing. but, i'm gonna do it. if i get all the performance stuff done, and i still have some cash left, i might shave the door handles, install a little sub-tube of my own design (still stock head unit), paint it, and possibly gussey it up some more.

whaddya think? am i an idjit, or do i have the right idea?

yea... i think you have a good idea. IF you want to turbo the engine you have now (stock i am guessing) then u won't be able to boost the stock internals past like 7psi (+ = risk of damenging them). If you read around and do some HW hopefully you will find exactly what you want to do. In terms of engines and stuff there are tons of possibilities. Good Luck!

if u wanna whoop the stangs... i'd go for a b16a2 swap (along w/ headers, exhaust, intake, etc etc). go sleeper status and take off the hub caps, lower it, and ur ready to go :smoker2:

OR

Go ls vtec (frankenstein) action. find a somewut used LS engine and go vtec baby. (im a newb, so if this isn't possible, please let me kno.)

well. personally Id swap for the B16a2/3. I mean, what does your car have now, a 1.6 SOHC with 106 HP and 103 ft/lbs, your gonna have a 1.6 DOHC VTEC with 170hp(JDM)/113 ft/lbs and probably be close to beating a turbod d16 and have tons more potential for later on. plus revving real high is always fun.

Yeah I'd save up for a swap. Your friend Dan sounds like a dumbass. He may drive a boosted 300z and work on his car but he suggested to boost a DX motor so in my book he's a dumbass. You said you want fast and a boosted DX motor does not fall under that category. It's just to much work for nothing. Swap that puppy then think boost.

I concur, but I would take it easy on Dan. He's a Nissan guy, not a Honda guy, there is a difference. Yeah, go best of both worlds, swap and boost.

and before this becomes a which engine to swap thread:
check the FAQ Honda Owner's Engine Swapping Guide. Decide for yourself, based on what kind of power you want, what you wanna spend, how much work you're willing to do, and how reliable you feel you or your local shop can make the potential frankenengine.

then, boost away! (I cant wait to piss on the grand pricks either! fuggers, )

and welcome to AF!

true dat this is gonna turn into a which b to drop in. so ill be one of the first to give an opinion

b18c1 usdm 170hp, jdm 180hp = around $3200
b16a2 usdm 160hp, jdm 170hp = around $2300
these are prices just for the motor do not include shipping, taken from www.hmotorsonline.com i think what mtor people get all depends on how much money they can spend and how fast u wanna end up going. i mean if yoru going for as much power as u can get out of a motor then i say go gsr because under the same conditions the gsr will always have more power. it would take less boost for the gsr to reach say 400hp then it would for a b16a, so it just kinda depends on how much boost you are gonna run and how much hp u have to spend. i think if your going all out like a fully built block and all, i think u can save the extra 1000 for a gsr which is ultimatle better.
sorry for the long post
