Radar/Laser detectors!
Does anyone use them?? How effective are they? Do they only detect it after the cop points the detector at you? I saw the a lot of them being used while watching gumball rally 3000, and became quite interested.

i have jus a standard detector...it works nicely (cept on lazer ones) the lazer ones don't give off any frequency til they pull the trigger at ur car, an then its too late. but...most of the lazer ones, actually break the lazer, an send back nothing to the radar meaning they don't kno how fast u are going...u can go pick up a cheap one for about 40 bucks from circuit city, an it'll pick up all radars within a certain radius, OR u can get a nice one (around 110++) an it'll only pick up certain frequencies that the good ol po's use now. its been a good investment...i mean if ur doin double the limit, no its not going to save u a lot of the time, but if ur chillin at 10 over, it'll give u PLENTY of warning to step on the brakes easily an not even be noticable that u are slowing down. really...go out an get a cheap one, it'll beep at a lot of things, but u'll figure out when it is a false alarm, an u'll be saved by it a few times. i've been saved by my $40 one about...10 times within a year. so its a good investment...hope i had added some insight.

yea there was noe guy on the gumballrally 3000 he had laser detectors radar detectors and jammers and a police scanner. But its not going to help if the cops are sitting at the side of the road and you pass them going 100+ they'll still know you're speeding

Is the extra $150 worth it for the Passport over the Bel?

Oh yea.. How do police decide what speed you're going while they catch you on the freeway? A radar/laser detector won't be accurate due to the number of other cars around you right? I heard that they have to pace you for a certain amount of time... Is that true?
Hey Self, I'm pretty sure that registering you car in MD won't void your use for the detector in VA. The dude in the Gumball Rally got caught for having a detector, and I'm pretty sure his car wasn't registered there.

Anyways, I got a uniden on ebay and it is way better than the Whistler POS I had before it, around town you get a lot of falsing, but when youre out on the freeway, it generally picks up the poes. Oh and a good rule of thumb to follow on a crowded freeway is as long as you arent the fastest car, and are steady (staying in your lane, not weaving in and out) then you will be fine. I drive from Napa to Sacramento doing like 80 in a 65, in the second to fastest lane (its a 4 lane highway) and cops have never even given me a second glance.

most state troopers (atleast in wa) use lazer radar's now...this means they can point it at one car, an get the reading. but, like ppl said before, if ur going w/ the flow of traffic, they have no reason to point it at u, therefore u'll be fine...BUT if ur a lone car, or inbetween packs, ur a VERY easy target, an those ARE accurate.

agreed melt! I have the whistler thing now it's ok...better than what I had before...Nothing!
You can always have the detector mounted in your dash. On some models they have an extender thingy where it mounts out in front of the car. So, the detector looks like it's part of the radio or something. My dad had that done back in the day in his 90' Reagal GS. It was pretty sweet. They had an optional equalizer for the radio, and he did not get that crap. So, there was like this little empty space, and he had it installed there.

ANSWER: Well, yes and no It depends on how much u speed. For instance, my dad is usually like 10 miles over, nothing outstanding, so the Bel 936 is perfect for him. It detects plenty of time ahead, enough to slow down. Now if you are a perfectionist and usually speed above 15+ over the limit, then the Passport 8500 may be for you. I haggled my way down to $249, which isn't that bad considering its the 1st or 2nd best there is. The range is incredible, but of course, the falsing is a bit more than the Bel. But you never know when that "falsing" really is a cop with a weaker laser signal. Overall, the Bel is probably better for most people, but I figured I wanted the best detector there is, because it will last me all through high school / college. So it really is a personal choice. |

this thing is worth it... it's a scrambler, and gives you an audible warning so you can slow down. by the time the cops gun reads your car, you should have slowed enough to be legal... |

well the problem with that above is that it is essentially just a laser scrambler. I haven't had my 8500 for too long, but everytime I've passed a cop, they were using radar. Not once has the laser warning gone off. Yes, it's true that laser is too quick for most radar/laser detectors, so you really just have to hope they aren't using laser. Now the biggest problem with that scrambler is that laser is 100% line-of-sight. The only way that scrambler could work is if the cop aimed it at your license plate. Sometimes cops do, sometimes they don't. Can you take that chance after spending $299??? Like I said before, it's all a matter of opinion about these things, but I say use the more conventional detectors and stay away from "scramblers".
