95 JGC Laredo with shifting issues

I have a 95 Jeep Grand Laredo that has trouble shifting gears. It is a 6 cyl with automatic transmission. What happens is as I accelerate the engine will surge always between 2nd and 3rd gear. The engine will rev up (not in gear) and then slam it into 3rd. Sometimes it will take upward of 5 seconds to shift gears and when it does it jerks pretty hard. As the engine warms up the problem slowly dissipates.

The problem arises more so when the weather is cold and the engine is not warmed up. Basically any time the temp gets below 60 deg I have this problem. In warm weather I do not seem to have a problem. It began this last winter, went away in the summer and now it is back. However, on warm days it does not do it as much or not even at all. The colder the weather the worse it is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My 99 has the identical fault. Can't wait for summer. I read at one point that re-flashing the PCM helped. I had this done at my local dealer with no improvement. $65.00 down.

How long has it been since your last fluid change? Fresh fluid can go a long way.

Re: 95 JGC Laredo with shifting issues

I bought it used about 6 months ago. I knew it had this issue so I was not surprised and got a very good buy. It supposedly had fluid chaged recently but who knows. I also understand it is important to use the absolute correct fluid. I will be doing that soon.

Re: 95 JGC Laredo with shifting issues

Thanks guys. I have not flushed my fluid and changed filters in a while however I plan to do that this weekend. You know it is funny I thought I was crazy that the problem only happens when it is cold but apparently there is an explanation. By looking on other posts on this site I have found that there are a lot of people with this exact same problem. I have put some of the links below. Apparently my problem may be that my front clutch seal is worn, however, I am going to flush my system and do some small repairs and tune-ups before I try to replace the front clutch seal. Check out these links they were very insightful.

Cool Re: 95 JGC Laredo with shifting issues

Adjust the TV cable ,,running from the engine to the trans,,,needs to "pull" harder,,,or possibly not connected ...If line pressure does not rise with throttle load,,,{thats what the cable does} 2nd band releases a touch before direct clutch applys,,,which will cause an engine flare between the shift!!!!! 95 TF A-500 transmission,,,which is what you have,,,,there is no shift solenoids on 1/2 or 2/3 shift valves,,,,ALL HYDRAULIC BABY!!!!!!!

NOW seeing the direct clutch gives 3rd,,,it also is utilized for reverse!!!!
If reverse has delays,,,slippage ect,,,ect,,,,all I told you is good for sh*t,,,might as well get-er rebuilt.
live green-go yellow,,,,,E85

O-ya,,,,,,let's see,,,,,A TF-500 is a TF-6,,,,TF-904 with o/d package on the back,,,,,,that was origionally produced in the 1960's,,,some of the parts WILL interchange between the units.....My point is reccmonned oil!!!!!! IT SHOULD BE RED!!!! dextron III mercron III chrysler3+,,,what ever......Only exception would be if driven in sub-zero weather ,,,then synthetic is preferred.....BUT THAT'S MY OPINOIN!!!!!!

Re: 95 JGC Laredo with shifting issues

I have the same problem but with a '93. Trannyman52 seems to know something about these. Mine started happening right after the dealer did a complete maintenance package and replaced the filter and Tran/transaxle fluid. If I back off when accelerating it will sometimes shift out of 2nd to third but has also had what feels like a clutch that has not engaged. Does this year have that cable you speak of or just hydraulic valves inside? Could they have used crap fluid? I no longer have anything done by this dealer and go to a good private mechanic. I used to do it myself but just too busy with other things. I can crawl under to adjust a cable if that is what it takes.

Thanks
