Completed: Team Astra Lancia Super Delta

My model of the Lancia Super Delta run by Team Astra in the Rally of Portugal in 1993. The kit is the Hasegawa 'Makes Champion', bought from Ebay, and my first experience of stripping paint with brake fluid - very effective. Decals are from Racing 43, and are slightly out of proportion for the Hasegawa kit - though I guess they are fine for the Racing 43 metal kits. Thankfully Tamiya green paint is an almost identical match to the decals, so I could patch where necessary. Other than that, the decals are great, and give a few options of rally as well - not just Portugal. Wheels/tyres are Renaissance 5-spoke Speedlines. Kit was standard Hasegawa fair, though try as I might I could not get the steering rod to join to both front suspension mounts - has anyone else had this problem with Hasegawa Lancia kits?

Grant.

looks damn good. i have the Racing43 TK and i'm looking forward to building it even more now that i've seen yours. just a question, though; is the car's stance a little high for a tarmac rally? not trying to nitpick.

Hi disomma. You are probably correct about the ride height of the car being too high. The '93 Rally Portugal was a mixed surface event, with days on tarmac and gravel. Though the car probably ran with different wheels during the gravel stages. Basically, I don't know how to lower suspension - and am too afraid to try on a relatively rare kit that I had chased for many years!

Re: Completed: Team Astra Lancia Super Delta

Did hey make more than one 'Makes Champion' Super Delta kit? I have a Martini-liveried one, I think it's a '93, and while it looks high for a tarmac car in the decalling instructions, I didn't think it was that high. Either the box art of pictures I found show it riding real low.

Nice work on your car, got detail/interior pics?

Hi Steve,

you are not exactly right...
Hasegawa Martini kit is the 92 Monte Carlo rally's Auriol car, but it exists a 93 gravel version, the 93 Acropolis rally with former world champion Carlos Sainz.
I have both, and don't think it does exist another one representing a super delta.

the Martini kit is really too high for a tarmac version, that's sure ! the tarmac version was "down on the tarmac" and used perfectly slick wide tyres... I saw it a few years ago in the "Mondial de l'automobile" in Paris, from the private collection of Prince of Monaco !
Tyres were very impressive !
I think that the gravel version is more accurate...

hope these words will help !

Potsie, great job on the model ! congratulations !

bye
Philippe

they did do a limited run of the Super Delta in the black and gold ESSO livery that won in the '93 ECR Piancavallo Rally. The stance was too high, so i lowered it when i built it. Great kit though, wish they would re-release it. every once and a while it's on ebay, but it usually goes for an arm and a leg.

Ooh excellent ! thanks for the information !
I got this one from Racing43 at 1/43 but didn't know it had existed at Hasegawa.
my excuse could be that I collect only word championship models, but that couldn't explain why I've never found or even seen this kit...
maybe a restricted serie not released in France...?
I don't know... sorry for my bad information first.
and thanks again for this correct information.

bye
Phil

Re: Completed: Team Astra Lancia Super Delta

I see. I will experiment with dropping the Hase when I get around to building it. I got it for like $15 when a hobby site was going out of business. Also picked up the red & white Tamiya Safari Celica and a Hase 037 cheap too .

Is the Italeri Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V kit any good?

It's horrible, a re-release of the Protar kit if I remember correctly. Lots of soft details, nowhere near as nice as the Hasegawa in my opinion.

Re: Completed: Team Astra Lancia Super Delta

Looks great Grant. Although as said before the suspension seems wrong. Never played with a Hasegawa Delta but I've heard modifying suspension height on them is very tricky. I also think that in 1993 they would have used slicks on tarmac, those molded tyres only came into play when full slicks were banned in the mid nineties. But screw the nitpicking - the construction, paint and decal work look fantastic!
