anyone in the military?, still got free time?

I took the asvab and signed all my papers for the USCg a long time ago then got into a bit of trouble to where I couldnt go in until all my court visits had been done and all fines/jail time paid/done. now I have been eligible for a long time but decided to delay it, now I am lookign into the navy or the USCG again. I have met with the recruiter from the navy recently and I dont believ something he told me, anyone in here should know if you are in the navy, he says he has ben in for 6 years and never on a ship once. said it depends on what job you choose, but i was told by someon I met once on a vacation that was in the navy and they said I would have to serve 60 days on a ship every year, something like that, I dont remember exact numbers but some required sea-time. anyways it isnt a big deal I just wanted to know. and my other concern is that if I were to enlist I wouldnt have much time for toys (I know of course no time during bootcamp and not much time during the schooling but once you start your job, would I have time to say, work on my truck, or driving RC trucks, or 4 wheeling either after work or on weekends? that money could help my projects come along alot quicker and would be real nice, plus I know I dont want to go to 4 years of schol and this is the only other way for me to make a decent paycheck.

No, you do not have to serve on a ship.

The defence attache here is a P-3 pilot. I doubt he ever did a cruise.

I mean, you just can't fit a P-3 on a carrier.

There are lots of professions that could never go on a cruise also. Intel, a/c mechanic, etc etc.

Re: anyone in the military?, still got free time?

I actually was thinking about going into aviation electronics, whatever you have to do to be the pilot of those RC planes that they fly for reconosoince or however you spell it.

another thing I was thinking of going into is search and rescue.

and the cruise isnt too big of a deal, i just wanted to see if that was the truth.

My brother's in the Navy... he says the idea is that about half of your time is at sea, half ashore, but it changes depending on your job. Also, if you pull it off right... he says there's a Chief at his station who's never been assigned at sea.

Re: anyone in the military?, still got free time?

alright, so he was right, I am sure if I was flying one of them RC planes, I probably would have to be on the carrier closer to Iraq to control it, but then again they are probably controlled by the satellites and whatnot, so maybe I wouldnt have to be on the boat.
I think I am gonna enlist when I get back from my cruise at the end of this month. I am gonna look into the USCG again as well.

Instead of trying to second-guess it all,why not swing on by the recruiting office and have a talk to the experts?

well, everyone tells me not to belive everything the recruiter tells you, because their job is to recruit you, so they are probably making things up or exagerating about how eay it is, or whatever is needed for them to get you to sign.

which is why I am asking people IN the military, I am not guessing anything.

Re: anyone in the military?, still got free time?

Dude,
I spent 5 years in the Navy. ALL 5 YEARS WERE ABOARD SHIP!!

There's this thing that your recruiter is not telling you about and it's called a sea-shore rotation. This is a standard policy in the navy with all rates (jobs). Like me, I was an Aviation Botswain's Mate Fuels. My rate had a 4 years sea duty, 2 years shore duty rotation. There are different versions of this but believe me, ALL jobs in the Navy have the potential to land you on a ship.

Personally, I loved being at sea. Especially working on a flight deck of an aircraft carrier. (USS Carl Vinson CVN-70). It was the coolest job in the world and how do you compete with that? The only reason I got out is that the military doesn't pay much.

Now to my next question, why on Earth would you want to join either the Coast Guard or the Navy and not want to go on a ship? Deployments and foreign ports are what separate the Navy from everyone else. If you don't want to go anywhere, join the Air Force.

And yes, don't believe a word that the recruiter tells you. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I love telling sea stories.

And BTW, I STILL work for the DoD as a civilian. Pays MUCH better!

well, I thikn they pay pretty good, I mean you start out at like 1100 bucks a month and then after 2 years If I am a E3 (y recruiter told me of advanced placement or somehting like where i am E2 after boot camp and E3 after I complete school) I am in the 1300/month range. and I really wanna go for 20 even if I hate it because being only 40, not ever having to work again and having at least 1500 a month coming in by that time sounds really good, Ill have a ton of cash saved, all my toys already payed off and then 1500 more to buy cool shit with. probably sounds like im greedy, most people say they wanna protect their country or something, my reson is I want a new truck/couple of quads/a jet ski/a racecar

but if I think of any questions I will shoot you a PM, just dont PM me back cuz I cant recieve them, it says I got one but then my inbopx is empty before I ever delete it or even read it for that matter.

Aircrew takes up a lot of time, but is probably the best job on the enlisted side.

Helicopters are by far the better choice if you want to be an integral part of the mission. Besides, its better to screw through the air than suck and blow.

Helicopters don't really fly, Mark. They're just so ugly they get repulsed by the ground.
