is a short shifter worth it??
ok I know how short shifters work and that they are a good upgrade, but on a car that lets say has intake, exhaust from the headers out with test pipes instead of headers, rebuilt and street ported engine, upgraded clutch but only a resurfaced factory flywheel would it really be of much use to have a short shifter? cuz the revs won't drop fast enough to need it would they? I don't know, maybe I'm missing some detail about it or something, just let me know what you all think

Re: is a short shifter worth it??
From everything I've read, a short shifter is great no matter what.
Makes the box much "tighter". I can't wait to get one. Let's you shift m4d quik y0!!1

Re: is a short shifter worth it??
but won't you still have to let the rpms drop just as much before hitting the gas full throttle again? doesn't that kind of take away the purpose of the short shifts?

Re: is a short shifter worth it??
well if you are good at shifting I would imagine you wouldn't see more than a .01 or .02 improvment in the quater mile maybe. I never got a short shifter when I had my mustang, but my friend had one and it was nice. Even if it didn't help him go faster or not it sure was nice feeling when you went to shift.

Re: is a short shifter worth it??
yeah, my truck has a nasty long throw. I'm pretty good at shifting, but a short shifter would definetly feel a lot better. I guess it feels better because it takes less effort to get it from one end to the other. a short shift wouldn't be much help in drag, but it'd be a great help for autocross. so yeah, it'd be a good idea overall, but it'd be more worth it if you do autocross every so often.

Re: is a short shifter worth it??
My shifter bushngs were shot when I bought my TII, well, at least by my standards.
I bought the Mazdaspeed short shifter they are pretty pricey. Mine makes that buzzing sound they warn you about that 1 in 3 (or 2 in 3 cannot remember) makes. Its more a matterof personal choice. Will it make you go faster? Hell no! Nothing worth speaking of. Its more of a choice of what you like. If you think a shifter that moves a fraction of te distance is good for you go for it. Otherwise just go to mazda and buy a new bushing set and put them in. My brother did that and the difference it made with his GXL was amazing. It also cost a lot less money. I personally like the short shifter a lot and would never switch back.

http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm
Read This: http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/shiftbsh.htm It will answer all your questions. It is fairly cheap to do and the feel is very nice. Its real crisp and precise. But it is still a long throw which isnt that long and works fine.

Re: is a short shifter worth it??
sweet, thanks for the info, my cousin had that mazdatrix one on his 87 GTU which he just sold I believe. I was gonna buy his shifter for $100 before he sold it(he sold it as a parts car) but I've now decided to wait on the short shifter for awhile, so I can get suspension done with tein s-tech springs and tokico non-adjustable shocks which is about $460, I'm only like $75 away from getting it WOO HOO!!
if anyone is interested in the mazdatrix short shifter for like $110 PM me and I'll see if he still has it or not, like I said he was planning on selling it, but I haven't talked to him all week so if you're interested let me know ASAP
