Rear klunking sound.
Hi:
Everytime I hit a certain bump on the road I hear this rear klunking sound from what seems like the rear suspension. Very hard to pinpoint as the car needs to be moving. I removed everything from the trunk to see if any difference. Still the same. It must come from underneath somewhere. Anyone experience this? Thanks for reading. |

Re: Rear klunking sound.
Could be this from a TSB. Camry (NAP) vehicles may exhibit a thumping/knocking noise from the rear suspension. Use the following instructions to repair the noise.
Remove rear seat cushion assembly and rear side seat back assembly. 2. Confirm rear upper strut nut torque. Torque: 49 Nm (500 kfgcm, 36 ftlbs). |

Re: Rear klunking sound.
The above is the Toyota TSB from Jan15 2003. But you might crawl under the car and look for loose items such as exhaust pipe hangars etc or fuel lines that are loose. Bring some wrenches or ratchets wit you and tighten things up

Re: Rear klunking sound.
I'm having the same problem coming from the front of my '99. Should I just go and check to make sure that everything's tight, or what? Is there anything else I can do for this? It's a real pain in the ass.

Re: Rear klunking sound.
I would have to agree with "csaxon", but it may be something as simple as the trunk lid being slightly loose. I am not sure. Just a thought.

Re: rear Banging noise.
Hey guys, your clunking sound is probably the rear swaybar bushings and rear swaybar links. The bushings are on the frame and are held in with small metal clips and rusted bolts. The swaybars links are attached to your shock and the swaybar.( Link is dealer item). Look for broken rubber "boots" on the link. Good luck!

Rear Clunking sound
I have a 93 Camry w/273,000 miles on it. I had the same problem. On mine it was the lower control arm on the passenger side. To check it jack the car up until the rear wheels are off the ground and grab the tire on the front and rear and see if you can wiggle it back and forth. The play would be either where the lower control arm connects near the bottom of the rotor spindle or where the lower control arm connects to the rear suspension cross-member. Mine was at the rotor spindle. I removed the entire rear suspension and replaced the lower control arm. The problem is gone.

Re: Rear klunking sound.
Quote:
odds are the noise is coming from rear sway bar bushings, there is a long bar that stretches across the rear, rubber bushings hold this bar in place, they wear over time, and the bar will make a clunking sound, pretty easy to replace, two 12 mm bolts, one other possibility, rear struts, rear strut mounts but check out the bushings first |

Re: Re: Rear klunking sound.
Quote:
the noise you are probably hearing is coming from the front strut mounts, the nuts tend to loosen up on the top of the struts take a 19mm socket and try to tighten the upper strut nuts, if not will need to be replaced, can be expensive |
