Finished - Nissan 350Z

Well here it is finally finished. Well almost. I still need to print the license plate, but my printer is out of ink. I've posted a pic of what it will be.

It became overcast as I got home from work, but I did snap some photos outside. The indoor pics are a closer match to the color anyways.

Since the final post in the progress thread I have added some stainless steel mesh to the lower grill, added panel lines, inside and out. And finished the exterior details

Looks very nice and the paint is super shiny. Great job on a popular car. Its hard to make a common model look extraordinary and you have achieved it nicely.

Overall I think the wheels go great with the character lines of this vehicle. The paint is super shiny and smooth.

You're right, I am a huge fan of this build. As much as I love the 350Z it's kinda plain especially on the front end. This is a very subtle but beautiufl modification. I bet if you posted it without the buildup, a lot of people would have to have made a double take to realise the work you did to the front end. There have been a few very dramatic modifications to Z's lately, all with various levels of trauma to the original. This one I think is my favorite though, because I am a huge fan of very simple, elegant solutions which your model exemplifies. The Porsche front end suits the car very well in size and visial interest. There is enough going on to make it attractive to the eye, but not enough to detract from the rest of the car. The slits in the Porsche body work mimic the slit left from the original Z grill, which calls out the character lines under the doors. The spoiler suits the car as well. I don't really like them, actually, on Porsches but the general blockiness of the Z really makes it look at home. And the targa top is perfect, giving it that extra bit of flair without losing the long, seductively elegant lines of the hard top Z (something Nissan totally botched with the convertible verson).

Technically, the thing has no flaws that I can see. Paint is perfect, body work perfect... the only thing I would have done different (had I the inspiration, forsight and skill to do any of it) woul be to add sun visors to the trailing edge of the windshield, folded up like people often do in those types of car. But that's just a little stupid thing that lept out at me.

That was one of 2 tips I wanted to mention in my progress thread and forgot to. I used a compass to scribe the line. First I put a piece of masking tape over where I wanted the line. This helped in keeping the needle strait, and not straying. I made a coupe light passes through the tape and on to the plastic. I used the window rubber as a guide, to keep the scribed line even. Then, I took the needle out of the compass, and made many light passes until it came apart.



The second tip I wanted to share was panel lines. I found a set of drafting pens that I had used in college. They range in size, and I used the smallest to do all the panel lines. The ink is water based "India Ink". It's very thin, and very black. This pen worked great. The lines are a consistant width, and with 2 simple passes through the seam and its done. You can find these at any decent art supply store. The have to be cleaned very well though, I clean mine in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. If my wife finds out she'll kill me.



Willimo - Thanks again for the kind words. I was going to put visors on, but I also wanted to have the top to be able to come on and off. I couldn't find a set that would be small enough, or curve with the roof to pull that off.

Dang! That looks awesome! Great paint, interior and mod. Still don't like that spoiler, but I would give this one a 9/10. BTW, it looks better with the top off. Sweet rims too.

Get a license plate tho - makes it look more realistic.
