I am looking for a little help with my car, before I take it in for service. I have a 99 dodge neon, it has 65,000 miles. I do not hot rod it or tow anything or anything like that, also we bought the car new. I was driving home today and I kicked it down to pass a car and it would not shift back into 3rd gear. So I drove home and checked the tranny fluid and is was fine. I took the car for a ride and it seemed fine, but when I stopped at a stop sign and took off again it stayed in first gear. Then I stopped angain and still it stayed in first, then again and it was fine, then it would kick down and not go back into 3rd. What should I do? Please help me. Thank you very much.

Hopefully the vehicle is still under some kind of warranty. Cause your tranny is most likely toast...
I had a similar problem with one of my cars... and its in the scrapyard now...it wasnt worth it for me.. but a '99 is definately worth it.. Good luck! |

I had a similar problem with my 3.0 litre Spirit. I know this is a different transmission, but the problem sounds familiar.
Every time the trans started acting up, I would pull over and turn off the motor. Then I would restart it and drive away and it would be fine. This happened about once a week for about a year and it never got any worse. My car, however, had about 160,000 miles on it. When the fuel pump went out, I figured it was time to junk it. That old Mitsu motor was smoking so much I was afraid it was going to get cancer. So I never did get the trans fixed. |

Re: 99 dodge neon tranny problem
Take it to a local transmission shop and get them to scan it. Most reputable dealers will do it for nothing. Takes about 2 minutes of their time. And it is possible the car has a 100,000 mile, 5 year powertrain warrenty. Don't wait to long.
