1998 Dodge Neon tranny woes

Hello all I was wondering if anyone here could help me. My fiance has a '98 Neon and we are having trouble with the transaxle. When shifting from Park to Reverse, Reverse does not engage right away and when it does it engages somewhat violently. Also when driving it doesn't want to upshift right away the engines revs up more than in should, then shifts. The transmission fluid looks great and is at the proper level. Her stepfather and I had replaced the trans filter and re-adjusted the bands to the proper specs as stated in the Hayne's manual and that mitigated the problem somewhat but it still has the symptoms as described above. Thank you in advance for any help.

Could be the syncro's going out on the tranny then. What kind of fluid did you use in the tranny?

Actually I used the Advance Auto Parts brand for Dodge trannies after I changed the filter and re-adjusted the bands, what was put in there before me is anyone's guess although the previous tranny fluid looked good anyway. What are the syncros anyway? I only ask because I don't know much about transmissions. When I dropped the tranny pan I didn't notice any large metal shavings or anything like that stuck to the magnet, the only thing that was sticking to the magnet was a metallic sludge. So I didn't think that there was anything seriously wrong mechanically with the trans. Is it possible to service the syncros yourself?

Cool Re: 1998 Dodge Neon tranny woes

This sounds exactly like the one that I am working on. I will let you know what I find, or you can let me know what you found. Thanks
