Interco Wear Question

Hey this is for those who are driving Swampers on the road, (TSL or SSR).

What pressure are you running. I was talking to some folks who have them on there full sized Chevy's and they are running a lower pressure (~18psig) than normal. They say it helps with preventing cupping of the lugs by allowing full contact of the tire with the road. I am just curious what those owning the X have seen. Are you running pressures about the same or are you experiencing cupping off the outside lugs?

I have noticed some cupping of the outside lugs but would not want to run at a low psi just to prevent this.

Yes it would help his MPG by reducing the rolling resistance.

likely wear out the center of his tires faster and cause the cupping you discussed.

My 32" BFG MT km's were put at 35psi when purchased and the first time I drove on a dirt road noticed the outside lugs were only touching by 1/4 of the lug. After chalking the tires and rolling them on pavement to see when I got a good contact patch I found out that I should run them at 26 - 28psi to get even wear. Now granted my mileage may suffer, but I want to get the most life out of my tires as possible due to the number of miles I put on in a year. I'd hate to have the center lugs missing and big side lugs remaining after 25K.

I know this doesn't specifically reply to the swamper question, but if you are wondering this would be a good exercise for you to perform. One thing I've realized is everyone has there own opinion and every tire guy will tell you something different. They dont' know the vehicle weight, etc. So take it in your own hands and figure out what is best for you.

I thought about upping the pressure but the ride is worse when the pressure is above 30 PSI! When I first drove to and from PNWX events I had the pressure at 36 PSI for the Swampers! The ride was like a buckboard!!! 90% of my highway driving is with the grabbers at 36 PSI. I am just wondering why the sudden drop all of a sudden in my MPG? I should have taken the swampers of after Thanksgiving weekend and put them back on for this coming weekend up in BC! I'll buy a timing light tomorrow and see if that is okay.

I will give this a shot in the next week.
In about two weeks the SSRs are going to be going off anyways (bring on the snow!)

I just wanted to share some info I had recieved that I had not really heard before. As for usefulness your post was very nice because the BF Mudds are another very popular tire on the X. Thanks again for all of the info from all.

I run 33" TSL/Radials and I was running 30-32 PSI until it was suggested by reliable sources that running higher PSI, 37-40 would greatly improved wear and gas mileage.

I ran 37 PSI for 2 weeks. I didn't notice any improvement in wear (I put on about 1000 miles in the 2 weeks) and my gas mileage didn't improve either.

The only effect higher PSI had for me was great lose in handling on the road. Not only did I bounce around over every bump and sharp turn, I actually fished tailed. Since I've gotten the TSLs I've never fished at all, even when I've tried.

Lug to lug, the wear on my tires is not consistent, however overall wear from tire to tire is pretty consistent. Some lugs have the cupping effect some don't, some have more wear on one side of the lug than others. The only "uneven" wear that would concern me is the chevrons, as they provide the on-road grip, my chevrons are wearing evenly.
