96 k1500 front brake pad wear question
Hi,
Today I removed the front brakes on my 96 k1500 to clean the abs sensors. The brake pads on the drivers side were if fine shape, but when I removed the passenger side caliper I found that the brake pad attached to the caliper piston is in need of replacement and the outside pad is in fine shape. My question is: Could this uneven wear of the pads be a result of a faulty caliper or am I overlooking some thing?? Could it be that the caliper piston is not releasing the way it should thus keeping pressure on the pad and wearing it out?? Would this also have a affect on the abs activating under 10 MPH. I did do a very short test drive and the abs did not activate when under 10 MPH. Thanks for all input, it much appreciated LS |

Re: 96 k1500 front brake pad wear question
From my experience, 2 things can cause the inner pad to wear: 1) caliper piston sticking 2) bad rubber brake line. The inside of the rubber line breaks down and the pressure is not released causing the wear. When it gets real bad, a brake pull is usually felt.
Give the age of your truck, I would suspect the caliper sticking. It is also a good idea to replace the caliper pin bushings (and lube them) if they have hardened. //2000CAYukon |

Re: 96 k1500 front brake pad wear question
Thanks 2000CAYukon, I do not feel a pull to the right when braking, the caliber pins and bushings have hardened. WIll replace caliper, pins and bushings when more funds are available.
Thanks again |

Re: 96 k1500 front brake pad wear question
Here is an easy way to remember what causes irregular pad wear:
Inboard pad worn more = stuck caliper piston Outboard pad worn more = stuck hardware (guide pin etc) Both pads on one side of the vehicle worn more = flex hose collapsed. |
