Angry Skid Plate Problems

Listen to this...today i went out to morey pit nearby for a little rip session. i have a 02 se which has the new front end and had a bumper/cover on the skid plate. i went to rip through a, what looked to be, easy mud puddle when i dropped into it about 2 feet. my front end bottomed out and my 4x4 pulled me out really quick...come to find out by my friends in a blazer that my cover for my skid plate fell off in the pictues, its the grey bar across the front. my question...WHAT KIND OF A SKID PLATE FALLS OFF WHEN IT SKIDS???

Just so you know, that "skid plate" is not a skid plate. It is made of pot metal and held on with sheet metal screws. The automotive industry calls it a "splash shield". Its purpose is to prevent excessive splash from making it to the top of the motor and shutting off the ignition system. If you want to see what a skid plate looks like, visit Skid Row Automotive. A skid plate must be tough enough to suspend the vehicles weight in inclement situations.

When Nissan talks about two skid plates they are talking about one for the engine and gas tank. As warmonger said that "thing" at the front is not a skid plate.

I wonder how long that "thing" is going to last on X's that off road?

FSR is probably having trouble understanding what you are saying? It helps if you take the slang out of the way you are writing. I know I am having difficulties too! Not "dis'in" you, just trying to get a clear idea of what you are saying.

But you X doesn't have true skip plates. Only Skid Row makes "true" skids for the Xterra.

I can't figure out what you're talking about either. Since you're the only one here I know of that has an '02 it would be good if you had a picture or two. I know you're not talking about the engine skid, so are you talking about a piece off of the bottom of the bumper? If so, that's all just plastic decorative crap and will not withstand any impact whatsoever. If you dropped 2 feet into a pit and ripped off parts then you were going too fast anyway or weren't paying attention so you shouldn't be surprised.

I don't see why this thread turned weird. I knew right away what he was talking about. The grey piece in the center at the bottom front of the front bumper. Why else would he mention from the get-go that it's an '02 with the new front end?
Yes, it's not a skid at all, never meant to be. I would expect it to get trashed in a situation like this. The phrase "you gotta pay to play" comes to mind. Shit happens, deal with it.

Yes Go get a brush guard and you will be offroad ready !!!!
Just make sure to ask for OFFROAD brush guard , it will cost you 50 $ more but you get the best kind there is !

also Make sure not to get ARB, because they are wimpy and probably too soft , will brake off easely probably even on the first rock

know what im sayin , dog !

Probably because you are the only one who spends most of your time at the dealerships taking pictures of stuff !
I am sure not every one got that much free time on their hands

That just means you've been looking at the front of the '02's too much!

I had a feeling he was talking about the bumper, but he was also talking about a skid plate. They are not the same thing, so I think that's why we're confused. That confused me since the skid is black and further back. I can't think of how the bumper looks exactly, but I do know it's all plastic and just for decoration. He'll sure be surprised when he gets a brush guard and it destroys the whole front bumper, the grill, and the corners of the fenders when he does the same thing!

You're right..."you gotta pay to play!" I'm guilty of doing some stupid things myself, but know that if I damage my truck I can't blame anyone else (well, usually!) and I have to accept the consequences.

Just to clear things up.

He's talking about the decorative center piece at the bottom of the bumper that ChuckH and OffroadX have noted. One of the guys in the Project X group during GoX had to take his off.(he had the silver rental X that he kept banging into the rock wall at Pahkipsie, over and over again).

Get this. Nissan actually made the 2002 front bumper lower than the 2000-1's. Must be part of that owner feedback they listen to so much.

P.S. I'm moving this thread. It's not a skidplate, and sounds more like trail damage (at least for Jersey)
