Help!!!! what is required to fix engine that cuts out for a split second, then returns to normal? This causes the car to jerk occasionally between the speed of 60 kilometers an hour and up. Distributor and wires and rotor have been replaced and nothing shows up on the diagnostic machine. If any one knows what it could be please let me know. Melbon

hey man can you tell me a little more about the car.
Is it injected or carberated? Does it to it in all gears, or only one gear? Does the scope show the car running rich or lean at all? It sounds like a fuel supply problem, or prehaps something simple like a loose wire in the ignition that is being buffeted about by airflow above 60kph

1989 reliant k 2.5 litre fuel injected automatic
Moppie Thanks for your response. This happens in drive after you get up to 60 kilometers an hour. It is intermittent. I have replaced the distributor, rotor and wires leading from the coil to the plugs. I took the car to two Chrysler Dealers and they put it on the scope and it showed nothing. I think they were just guessing, It cost over $300.00 and nothing changed It is what I call a ripoff. Since this car has been around for quite a while they must have had similar problems. What do you think it might be?? Melbon

Ok, it sounds like a fuel problem.
My first sugestion would be to replace the fuel filter. (I have no idea how, I dont even know what an 1989 reliant is. (the only Reliant I know is the britih reliant schimtar with a Crysler v8) Since you've had the igntion system looked at, it means the problem is most likly fuel starvation at high engine speeds. If a new fuel filter doesn't fix it then you need to look at getting the injectors cleaned. (I also assume you've replaced the air filter? and its had the timeing set etc) I would also find another mechanic, to be charged $300 and the problem not fixed is robbery. If it happened over here the garage would be in trouble with the Consumers Institute, and could be fined.

1989 reliant
Thank for your suggestions. Wish we had the same rules up here regarding mechanics. This was a couple of Chrysler Dealers and I got no satisfaction with chrysler canada in regards to their services. I will try the things you mentioned to see if this rectifies the problem. Thanks again for your suggestions. Mel

See if they have a dynometer, put your car on that and take it up to 60mph and see if it happens again, because on a dyno you can have all the fancy computers hooked up while driving 60 mph.

engine cuts out
Your problem is simple. You require a new TPS. Throttle position sending unit. It works like a riostat. When it wears out it sends a false signal and assumes you have dropped to an idle.
