1991 Chevy Silverado K1500

Okay so I got this truck given to me from my friends dad, The truck sat since 2002 or so. Hasnt ran since, So my brother and me towed it home and I started working on it. I replace the tailgate, Replaced the lights, Did a oil change, Dropped the gas tank out and ran a gallon of gas and seafoam through it. Then I was driving it the other day and I decided to play the radio so I pressed the power button and I heard a pop noise. Like not a fuse pop noise. This happens every time you turn it on/change the volume. Its comming from the speakers and the louder the volume the louder the popping is. Is the radio just bad? Its a funny square shape and I havent ever seen a radio that would fit this. I checked all the fuses and I found nothing.

...Anyone got any ideas? I hate driving without a radio

the radio amp is creating the pop sound thru the speakers. cheap radios do have this problem/not good for the speakers. I would remove the radio and check that the wiring is secure and the radio is grounded/ground wire secure to a good ground.

crutchfield my have some kits/radios for you vehicle fit. if they do , buy the interface wiring kit , to properly connect to the on board vehicle connector . rather than hack up the wiring and possibly mess up the vehicle/radio.

Re: 1991 Chevy Silverado K1500

I looked on for a radio that would fit in tons of stores. Only one I found close to fitting it was the 400 dollar one at walmart. I would need to cut the dash for it to fit though.

I tried pulling the radio out but alas it will not come out. It comes out about 1.5 inches and will not come out any farther. And there are no plugs on the back, The wires are connected directly in to the radio. I tried following them but they disappeared in to the firewall. Guess i'll need to find wiring schematics or something.

POST BACK HOW THEY HELPED YOU !
They helped me alot. They tried to show me a few radios that should fit. But the hole was too fucked to fit it. So they gave me a solution.

Anyone wanting to know the best way to hook a radio up to this type of truck

GM In-dash Receiver Kit

And

GMC/Chevrolet In-dash Pocket

I had to find the wiring harness and shit myself but I got it working.

I feel bad that I used their customer support. But didnt buy from them, I found way better deals. From them, All these things I needed woulda costed me 60-100 dollars. From ebay I got the parts I need(I have them and have installed them. They work just fine) for 31 dollars, Exact same brand and everything.

Though the weird thing. The thing I called the "radio" was just the buttons...I followed the cords to this weird ass silver box(This explains why I couldnt find the damn antenna). THIS was the radio. The buttons were just the controls for this. This is about directly under the steering column. Antenna and shit plugs in there. So after finding that it took me a bit and I finally got my radio in.

Thing I was slightly sad about though, Is my speakers didnt work with my new radio, They cut out at volume 4...So I had to spend like $50 bucks on new speakers. But overall, Im very glad you suggested crutchfield and you deserve a cookie for helping me

Re: 1991 Chevy Silverado K1500

I thought they could direct you to what you needed. being an old vehicle the cost is a big factor.

the cost they charge is higher than EBAY. EBAY its a crap shoot with what you get and no support with issues.

good luck with your radio . speakers being replaced is very important if they are cutting out. the coils may be shorting out inside them. this will damage the radio amp.

Yeah I knew I wouldnt have any support from ebay. But I knew exactly what I was getting in to and I was pretty confident that I wouldnt screw up. I got everything replaced and stuff. Only problem im finding is the wires are like 6 inches longer then I need. But im not gonna screw with that.
