97' E36, 17x8.5 too wide? Mods?

Hello,
i have a 97' 328is with sport package. Stock wheels are 16x7 with 225/50-16 tires. I want to upgrade to 17x8.5. Will I have to do any modifications, like using spacers? How wide can I go with a wheel diameter of 17" without having to modify?
Thanks, Russ

wheels

if you car is not lower it should be ok, but your ABS,ASC stuff like that could go wrong, because the speed of the rim change do to change in the wheel size. ABS could go into safe mode.
