I'm sorry if this isn't in the right location on the site but I really wasn't sure where i would put a problem so i hope this doesn't piss anyone off.
My brother owns a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan AWD, and as of late it's been acting up on him. At any point while driving the entire van will go nutz, the dash lights will all come on , the DIC will read just some odd numbers and the van will ultimatly shut down. He's brought it into a mechanic already thinking the Alternator was the issue or possible the battery but both of which come out with flying colors. He took the van from the mechanic yesterday so he would have a way to work and it happened again so now after doing some searching I found your form in hopes you guys can direct us to what could be the issue at hand . My first assumption was that the computer/BCM were taking a sh** , or the main ground for the vehicle was rusting out. I for one have not had the opportunity to look over the vehicle , i live roughly 2hrs away but just want to do what i can to help him if it indeed is something i could fix for him with general hand tools. It seems to happen more whne he's driving highway speeds of 55, but there is no "SET" time when it will happen it's random. Any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated, TMUGZ |

Re: 2000 Dodge Caravan AWD issue!!!
If the instruments are going squirrely it sounds like it could be the worst case scenario (stalling) for the all too common cracked solder joint problem on the instrument cluster circuit board that plagues 3rd generation vans (96-00). The solder joints securing the connector to the circuit board crack, opening the CCD data bus circuit, creating all sorts of seemingly unassociated problems. Sometimes you can induce it or cure it by smacking the dash above the cluster. The fix is to reflow the dozen or so solder joints on the circuit board. If you think this could be the case I have a slideshow explaining how to get at the cluster and make the fix.
If the instruments are fine the list of fixes for your stall is long. High on that list is the crankshaft sensor. It often fails killing the engine without throwing a code. Speaking of codes, do you have any?

Re: 2000 Dodge Caravan AWD issue!!!
Correction apparently the battery light comes on just before the issues starts up, the dic starts showing all 000000 and all the lights dim. He had the battery and alternator checked and they are both good, but he also told me while being followed last night he was told that sparks were coming from the rear of the vehicle and he has trailer wiring on his van. This leads me to believe that the wiring is in some way "mangled" and for ing the vehicle to shut down,or short out.. Either a broken wire, moisture ... Would that be possible?
