89 Cavalier Cooling fans always on and eng wont start
Ok I just bought this 89 Cav (in AWESOME condition) it was a steal. BUT.....Now, Fuel issue? i think.
First i turn the key on and the radiator fans turn on and wont stop. when i crank the key the motor turns over but nothing. i see no spray in the injector, i turned the key on and off and 1 time out of 25 trys the fuel would then just dump in the bowl and not stop... Now strangely i had key on and fans blowing and then they just shut off. i went to start car and all worked??????????? 15 mins later it died again with same thing with fuel and fans??????? Ive replaced fuel injector, fuel pump, throttle position senser, fuel regulator. i only have two things left (the air/idle($68) and the ECM($100)) SOMEONE PLEASE HELP........ |

Did you ever check for codes?
Also, check power and grounds to the ECM? Try tap test on ECM? |

also it was strange after i pulled the ECM out and looked at it then replaced it it did start to work briefly....
I want to steer more to the ECM being bad..... But also thinking bad wiring too..... |

Re: 89 Cavalier Cooling fans always on and eng wont start
The tap test is just that. Access the ECM, leaving it plugged in. While someone is cranking the car, hold on to the ECM with one hand and give the flat side of it a good smack with the palm of the other hand and see it the car starts, or if its running you can smack it at see if it dies. Also try some back and forth pressure on the connectors and check for the same results. You said it worked ok for a while after you unplugged and plugged in the ECM, it may have a broken solder joint on the circut board.

Re: 89 Cavalier Cooling fans always on and eng wont start
Just me working on it. i got it runningtoday but radiator fans are on and never shut off. and idles very very rough.
if it dies the injector sprays full stream in the bowl till i kill the key. The funny thing is when the radiator fans stop the car wants to run right, but when they are on it has a mind of its own.......still confused. I have also noticed that allmost all the relays under the hood have a tar like coating all over them. also when i move wires around under the hood i hear a clicking noise but cant find where it comes from, or if it means anything...... |
