That IS a very kool clip, and yes, I have seen it before..always fun to watch again though....:evillol:

Got some more done yesterday and this morning....
The head is finally taking shape, inlet runners/tubes are made, just need to add a bend to each..

Here is the stock motor set up (on the right) with my spare motor and new head.
Height difference is negligible, so I am really pleased I trimmed the thickness of it...:naughty:

This is a very interesting and amazing project. I could learn alot from you in determination and patience. I like how you did the interior holes for weight savings. Been getting some bench time this weekend......:naughty:
Also, had some requests to see how it looked in the engine bay......coming up down the page...

First I wanted to check the hood fit....not all that good. I had checked it briefly very early on, but never paid it too much attention.
The fit is horrible. The hood is warped slightly, but it makes a huge difference at all corners....some up, some down....I'll probably display it open.
http://images38.fotki.com/v266/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenjan252010009-vi.jpg

http://images47.fotki.com/v1477/photos/6/63306/7073322/jan242010006-vi.jpg

http://images17.fotki.com/v521/photos/6/63306/7073322/jan242010007-vi.jpg

The Weber/Solex carbs have had their mating surface "machined"..(trimmed with a #11 blade..)
Their flange was molded as one with the manifold flange, so I thinned it down.
Mocked up, they look right at home hanging off the head....
http://images19.fotki.com/v276/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenjan252010012-vi.jpg

Not a huge amount of spare room in there...the rocker cover actually hits the hood as well, so I''m modifying the sump to allow it to sit lower...
http://images54.fotki.com/v554/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenjan252010015-vi.jpg

And with the amount of time I've spent going over ALL the reference pics I have..the engine orientation did not hit me till I test fitted it....
It NEEDS to slant the opposite way.................DOH ! :jerking:

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever done this and had it work? Not at all to be critical, but I think that's one of those techniques that always sounds good and sensible- up until you try it.

I have used the hot water technique loads (see my Nissan Silvia thread!). Some model plastics are a lot more flexible than others and a lot more easy to re-shape. I have experienced a couple of occassions when the plastic has strated to split due to too much bending but it was usually progressive and therefore any un-repairable damage was avoided!

Just realised I should have mentioned that this is a fantastic thread with superb quality work! The Datsun 240ZG is looking stunning so far!

Thanks guys..:naughty:

MPWR and Viccario,
I gave the hood a bit of a tweak, it didn't require a lot....but it was enough to annoy me. :iceslolan
But it appears to run a little deeper than that.
The hood now rests with all 4 corners touching my bench top, so I must have glued the front end not square or true...:banghead:
I will carefully unpick it a re-do the front parts....:runaround:

Also spent the weekend re-doing other parts...:uhoh:
I had something bugging me with the rocker cover.....:screwy:
Last week I contacted a person in Japan (Mechanic shop owner) who has worked on a car equipped with an OS Giken head.
He very kindly emailed back with lots of excellent detailed photos to help me. :1:
Fresh with new reference, I shaved another 1.5 - 2mm off the top of the cam cover, the bulky part which covers the gears.
This allowed me to finally add the OS logo which has been missing, plus some extra hood clearance...:iceslolan
http://images17.fotki.com/v521/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenjan312010003-vi.jpg

http://images20.fotki.com/v533/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenjan312010014-vi.jpg

Carb linkages added as well...

Aside from a few other little tweaks, that's about it this week....
With some luck, once I reset the front end sheetmetal, my hood clearance issues will disappear.... :icon16:

More soon guys...

Hasn't been a lot of activity here of late, but I did make a new set of headers..

Started adding detail to the block, water bypass pipe added, mesh hose painted matt black.
Also have the oil pump and adaptor in place, ready for connection with a cooler..
http://images20.fotki.com/v528/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenfeb072010005-vi.jpg

Start of the new headers, made from 3.2mm solder.

http://images52.fotki.com/v8/photos/6/63306/7073322/OSGikenfeb072010033-vi.jpg

And getting ready for plug wires....took forever to nut out how I would tackle this...
I ended up making a punch from brass tube, punched out some .005 inch sheet.
The result left me with six nicely domed tops for my plug towers..:naughty:

Hello all,

Well, the small amount of work started on my second (stock) build has escalated....:evillol: Oh, but I have started to detail the triple Solex carbs for this build as well...:naughty:

The stock version will be built along side the other, so I haven't worried about a second thread...
Initial work began on the exhaust system...I had used several key components on the modified car, so.....I began scratching up a stock system.

First version was a twin pipe, twin-tip.....
http://images51.fotki.com/v177/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzfeb222010023-vi.jpg

However, most reference show that a single tip would be more accurate....so I then made that.
http://images53.fotki.com/v546/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmar182010007-vi.jpg

The single tip will win out in the end I feel....
Motor reference also show a heat shield fitted to the manifold, a part Tamiya did not add...
I made a basic one from .5mm sheet, added some ribs and bolted it in place.
The carb linkage mounts were also added at this time.
http://images42.fotki.com/v1380/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay102010006-vi.jpg

http://images53.fotki.com/v535/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay122010009-vi.jpg

And reworked some detail on the SU carbs. Added a choke cable mount and lever/linkage plus some extra fuel lines.
http://images53.fotki.com/v536/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay162010006-vi.jpg

Once they were mounted, I added extra fuel line connections, vacuum hoses and it was starting to take shape....
http://images39.fotki.com/v1285/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay182010007-vi.jpg

I wasn't satisfied that I would be happy using what Mr. Tamiya supplied for the main fuel line either...:uhoh: I is quite prominent at the top of the motor...
So, I made mine from .7mm solder. I added a couple of brackets and fuel junctions to hold it all together.
It is bolted to the front engine cover and a bolt on the rocker cover.
Tamiya's version in the back ground...
http://images12.fotki.com/v532/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay182010001-vi.jpg

From there, I made some mods to the air cleaner...
Adding some extra connections for vacuum lines and making an air cleaner element fro hi-density foam.
http://images116.fotki.com/v706/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay252010003-vi.jpg

http://images12.fotki.com/v531/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay272010007-vi.jpg

Finally, some plug leads....plus an extra hose or two.
http://images116.fotki.com/v1596/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay292010011-vi.jpg

http://images12.fotki.com/v252/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzmay292010010-vi.jpg

There is still a few touch-ups to take care of....but it's getting close.....
More as it happens..( to both builds. :) )
cheers

Holy crap......embarrassment +++ :redface:
How long since you guys got an update......? Hmmmm....Here we go then. :)

First up, the "stock" version.
Basic fuel and brake lines run. Done. Started at the rear.....
http://images56.fotki.com/v1600/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzjune06a2010010-vi.jpg

Including a new fuel filter I made up...the kit part looked to awkward or weird....??
http://images116.fotki.com/v1596/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzjune082010003-vi.jpg

I made some brackets and linkages for the firewall, they will connect to the throttle linkage eventually....
http://images19.fotki.com/v1612/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzjune132010003-vi.jpg

Added some extra hoses to the motor. Just the heater hoses....Had to re-route my thoughts with these, as my reference showed mixed methods of running them.
I think they will be ok as is.....
http://images112.fotki.com/v584/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzjune11a2010004-vi.jpg

And finally, an overall look at the bottom. Motor in place, along with the single exhaust system. :)
http://images54.fotki.com/v202/photos/6/63306/8487227/stockzjune112010009-vi.jpg

Then, an update on the modified 240.......
After several agonising attempts at plug leads, I had success....:p
And many.....many hours of testing, cutting, re-testing........I had the carbs ALL linked up..:runaround:

http://images19.fotki.com/v1612/photos/6/63306/7073322/240ZGjuly042010009-vi.jpg

Work is still (kinda) progressing, all be it slowly......
I've started to modify the guards to fit the over-fenders a little higher than stock.
This will enable the car to sit a bit lower too....which is what I was hoping to achieve....:evillol:
I'll update as soon as possible guys, and truely apologise for the delay....

And made some adjustments to the cage...a couple of the bars were not lined up correctly, they are now. :)
Hope to have something worth getting pix of soon....
cheers
Greg :aus:

I haven't checked the forums much lately.. and am kinda glad I haven't missed anything! Hah.. I'll probably be using your thread as reference when I get back to mine, which hopefully will be sometime this year.

It surely isn't forgotten though, and hope to get back to it soon enough. :wink:Working on a couple of drag cars to break the boredom. :iceslolan

Guys, sorry for such a delay....never expected to be so withdrawn for such a long while...:shakehead
However, things are on the up. :iceslolan
A little over a week ago, I got the Datsun out of storage and began to get highly motivated once more...
As I have 2 of these large 240's on the go, soon to be joined by their 3rd brother, I shall keep all 3 in this one thread to make things easy.

Plans have been altered along the way too, with plenty of time given to consider my options, I have re-arranged most of my photos in my Fotki albums.
There may be a few still incorrect to their build, but they are few. :)
The main changes are to do with motor swaps, but I hope these changes will only be seen as a positive move, and trust that you will still enjoy the ride as much as I do. :)

The blue car (original build) will now be getting a turbo'd RB26 from a Fujimi GTR. :evillol:
The "showroom" stock build now gets the OS-Giken motor, to be replicated (close) to the TOMITAKU version.
The 3rd will be a stock 240ZG "wide arch" model. (slight mods of course....:iceslolan)

So, this passed week my attention has been towards both turbo and Tomitaku.
I started by adding a modified fuel system to the TOMI car. An inline pump/filter was made, then I ran a fuel line to a fuel block on the inner front fender.

As the interior will require mostly stock components, I started making some seat belt hardware.
I have some surgical tape which I hope will become a better seat belt than my "trial" version. :uhoh:

And I have started a basic roll cage.
Driver seat is from the Fujimi GTR and will have a race style harness.

This is my plan for the turbo-charged version....

But.......................stock, it will not be. :iceslolan :naughty:
So, after a long session searching reference, I decide on a semi-race look.....
I made these to begin.

You may see, I have also altered the cam cover, deciding on two separate covers instead.
Here is an overall photo of some of the parts being used/made.

And a quick mock up.....

So, with some luck and time to work, I sure hope these builds keep me busy for a while. :)
I hope you like and approve my decision to change things up a bit.
Thanks for stopping by, and please ask questions if you have any, critique is also highly valued.
Cheers
Greg
